Sandra Cisneros is a short story writer and a novelist whose work explores the lives of the working-class. She’s also a poet, essayist, performer, and artist, but we’re only focusing on the first two. Her numerous awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, the Texas Medal of the Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, several honorary doctorates and national and international book awards, including Chicago’s Fifth Star Award, the PEN Center USA Literary Award, and the National Medal of the Arts award presented to her by President Obama in 2016. I have no idea what any of those are, but it seems she’s kinda popular. Most recently, she received the Ford Foundation’s Art of Change Fellowship, was recognized among The Frederick Douglass 200, and won the PEN/Nabokov Award for international literature. Again, I have no idea what any of those are.

The Chicano movement took place in 1966 and 1967, they were attempting to have the federal government to honor the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Inflation grew to help fund the Vietnam war. Both US and USSR were in a race to see which one would arrive on the moon first. Arguments and fights broke out until National Guard's arrived and restored law and order. (Not the show)

The Chicano movement was founded due to the racial discrimination against the Mexican Americans. After the Mexican/American war even though they were promised equal rights, jobs, and power, the Mexicans in America and immigrating to America found themselves treated as second class citizens. The movement adopted the name Chicano, which was a racial slur against them, and wore it with pride. The leaders of the movement pushed for many reforms including labor rights and education reform, they also pressed for land reclamation of land claimed by Anglo settlers. Source, History.com

What i learned from this article is that she had lots of struggles publishing her novel. A lot of people enjoyed the book when it came out. There was one critic who did not agree with the novel, because of the character’s goal is to leave the barrio which is considered betrayal to the barrio. Although the critic has so hurtful people defended her because a Mexican man and woman have much different experiences.

The Chicano Movement, was a social and political movement that was inspired by acts that had happened before of resistance from people that were Mexican, especially of Pachucos ( male members of a counterculture associated with zoot suit fashion) in the 1940s and 1950s, and the Black Power movement, that worked to spread a Chicano/an identity and a view that combated.
