When I imagine this scene I see him as the boy in the backward red hunting hat, right on the edge of the rye field, the ocean representing adulthood. The cliff itself is an unstable platform with cracks and missing bits, and the people are Mr. and Ms. Antolini since they're shown to be the only people who seem to understand him and the only adults he feels safe being around.
