This project shows my understanding of "The Catcher in the Rye". The scene drawn is from ch.22 when he describes how he's someone who saves children from falling off a cliff, which can be understood as a metaphor for entering adulthood. When I imagine this scene I see him as the boy in the backward red hunting hat, right on the edge of the rye field, the ocean representing adulthood. The cliff itself is an unstable platform with cracks and missing bits, and the people are Mr. and Ms. Antolini since they're shown to be the only people who seem to understand him and the only adults he feels safe being around. The sky is a mixture of orange and blue while the sun is setting, this represents the golden hour that seems to last forever as these are his steps into finding himself.

The playlist is made up of 3 main categories, songs that I feel fit Holden's personality, songs that represent the themes and symbolism of the story and songs that I feel Holden would actually listen to. There is a large variety of songs, genres and artists within this playlist that span over different periods of time. The songs I chose to represent the themes were mainly chosen based on the lyrical stories that the songs themselves tell.

This shows our understanding of Catcher in the Rye, by displaying some of the important symbolism in the book through the medium of a movie trailer. We display that Holden is a chronic liar using the intro and the old lady scene. We also display that Holden is often powerless in his life, and we show that by using the scene with him and Stradlater. We also display how Holden is often misunderstood in his life, by using the taxi scene. We also display how Holden tries to preserve the innocence in his sister by thinking of buying her the 'Little Shirley Beans' record, and by becoming angry when he sees the '🤬 YOU' on the stairs inside of Phoebe's elementary school. Finally, we also display that Holden, even though he talks about people in a bad way, still misses the people that were in his life during the story.

Holden spends the bulk of the book complaining. It’s endearing at times, sad at others, but on the whole, it makes him somewhat of an irritating character. Still, his frustrations with the disingenuousness of others, and especially his grievances about dating and lost love, can help readers to understand that they aren’t the only one coping with problems, big or petty. He also has a hard time with being around grownups and having trouble not have the best parents. Having to take care of his little sister and being around a guy that was dating his past crush.

Holden is surely one of the most well made characters i ever read about.

I Drew different parts of the story that stranded out to me . On the right corner I drew Holden and his red hat that’s it’s comfort and true self . He says it’s his type of source of safety and security for him .He also ended up gifting it to phoebe as a gift .right below that it’s the drawing of the pimp and how I found that part interesting how he just wanted to talk to the prostitut and how he ended up getting pressed by the pimp at the end of the night .Then I go on by putting the f*uck because i find it crazy how upset and angry he was when he saw it he wanted to kill whoever wrote it .He really didn’t want phoebe or other children to see it and take there innocence. Next to I drew phoebe and Holden looking at the carousel just because how much he cared for her . I drew the museum of natural history for the fact that it brought him memory of trips there and how be remembers everything the same and that’s where he waited for phoebe.I also drew the broken record it brought out how he is having a hard time growing up and he want everything to stay the same and when he broke it it meant like his innocence have shattered apart .The ducks also he sees that the ducks have nowhere to go like the way Holden feels lost in the world where he seems like he can’t connect with anyone else .finally the carousel it was a nice ending with that and how he’s which phoebe . He also thinks it’s pretty with music and motion but Doesn’t go anywhere .

Holden's brother Allie is someone who means a lot to him. He expresses this in the detailed paper he made for his roommate about Allie's baseball mitt that has poems written on them. This baseball mitt represents Holden's love for Allie and how his death impacted the way he views and experiences the world.

The view of this drawing shows the feeling of being swallowed whole by the surrounding city, the red hunting hat is Holden's way of staying safe. It's his safe zone in a world that he doesn't fully understand, from streets he can not cross because he's not ready to take a step and move on to the other side. It's the fear of not knowing what happens and what you forget when you move on to the next stages of life. Then, near the end with his sister on the carousel and Holden watching from afar, the carousel had shown us it's to represent the inner child and the innocents everyone has within them.

This poster shows our understanding of "The Catcher in the Rye" because it consists of different symbols in the story. We wrote a short description for each item or place to explain what each of the items/ places symbolize or mean to him. The duck pond, his uncertainty about the future. He asks people about the ducks multiple times in the story because he dislikes the feeling of uncertainty. The road, his fear of growing up. He sees the crossing of the road as moving from one stage of life to the next. Also the glove he keeps it around he doesn't want to put his brothers death in the past and always remembers it by keeping the glove. Then the red hunting hat symbolizes Holden's alienation from society and his intentional isolation from people. In addition, buying the hat is Holden's way of trying to protect himself from society's consequences, such as the ridicule he probably received after losing his team's equipment. Finally The Carousel symbolizes youth, innocence, memories, childhood, infinity, and a pattern that doesn't change. The consistency of the carousel shows that Holden doesn't want things to change, he doesn't want to grow up and move on.

In this piece, the artist shows Holden in a phony world built by lead pencil, while a bright yellow aura encircles him. The contrast highlights Holden's disconnection from his surroundings. Only a few objects, like his brother's baseball mitt and his sister's carousel, have color, suggesting they hold personal meaning for him.
The billboards in the background represent Holden's selective attention to the fake world. For example, one billboard shows Jane Gallagher's building, creating anticipation for the forever-anticipated phone call. Another billboard displays Stradlater's building with the words 'handsome' and a comb, reflecting Holden's focus on appearances and his struggles with his sexuality. Additionally, a building depicts the drink Holden ordered from a bar, emphasizing his interest in superficial pleasures.
The aura surrounding Holden, inspired by the night sky, symbolizes his isolation and loneliness. His solitary presence in the nighttime scene emphasizes his emotional detachment. The word "lies" on a building adds depth to Holden's character, reflecting his skepticism about the world's authenticity.
Through the artist's skillful composition and use of color, this artwork effectively captures Holden's perception of a black and white world, his selective attention to objects, and his profound isolation. It encourages viewers to explore Holden's complex personality and contemplate themes such as truth, disillusionment, and the struggle for genuine connections.

This drawing represents my understanding of chapter 7 “When I was all set to go, when I had my bags and all, I stood for a while next to

the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor. I was sort of crying. I don't know why.

I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it, and then I yelled at the top of my goddam voice,

"Sleep tight, ya morons!"

I'll bet I woke up every 🤬 on the whole floor. Then I got the hell out.”
