KNITTING- WEEK 1

Sangitha A/P Balu
A174949
22 July 2022

I decided to learn knitting for my elective posting via an online course in Domestika.
During the 1st week, I had brief introduction about knitting with my instructor. I have learned about types of materials required for knitting such as yarns, circular needles, cables, measuring tapes and markers. For my project, I had to buy few bundles of 200g/200m bulky yarn, 6mm needle with 100cm cable and few markers from shoppee. After I have collected all of the required materials, I have learned about a proper way to hold the circular needles and the yarn and then, mount the stitches in the circular needle. I also learned making few rows of right sticthes which is known as "knit stitch".

The important points that I must remember are the techniques to read the labels of the yarn, choose appropriate materials for the knitting project, mount stiches on the circular needle as the first step in the making of a fabric and do the knit stitches.

I felt overwhelmed with all the inputs I have received for the first week because, I thought knitting is about yarns and few circular needles only. But, after the introduction to knitting, I realised that knitting requires utter focus for the beginners and involves many skills and techniques to create various designs.

At first, I was worried about learning all of the techniques within one month. But, my instructor is so kind to teach every skills with patience and I loved the way she gives instructions for every single step in knitting. I also did some searchings in the internet to have more insight into knitting and prepare myself for the future lessons.

My first week of elective posting was very exciting and informative.

I am planning to have my hands on knitting few other types of stitches and create fabrics from the yarns next week.

First Week of Mandarin for Beginners Class

Kareshma Nair A/P Pathmanathan A174923
22 July 2022

I have chosen online course to study Mandarin. My first class started with watching a few videos from the course, “Chinese for beginners” conducted by An Na on Coursera. The first video was an introductory video that briefly explained about the Mandarin language and the course. The next videos were about how to greet people and learning about one’s name and nationality. Each lesson was equipped with practice and graded quizzes.

Points to remember from week 1 is the way to greet people and introduce ourself in mandarin. I learned about self-pronounce and a few common words that we use in daily life. Besides that, we were also taught new words in every lesson to improve our vocabulary. All the new words would be used in a video to aid us on how to use those words in daily life. In Chinese, every word is pronounced using their phonetics system. Each syllable is composed of an initial, final and a tone. I learn how to pronounce each word with a tone. Lastly, after every lesson, a quiz was given to test my level of understanding which encourage me to focus more during the lessons.

It is always fun to learn a new language and it is not as tough as I thought. I am sure that I will be more confident interacting in mandarin in future.

There were no difficulties throughout the week as the videos and study materials are provided and the study time is flexible.

Two words to describe my elective posting is fun and exciting.

My plan for week 2 is continue watching to the teaching videos and answering the quizzes.

Learn Korean

Nur Hannah Binti Mohamed Nazren Azle

A174829

23 July 2022

2.

I have done an online course on Coursera to learn the Korean language which is conducted by an Associate professor Kang seung hae from Yonsei University. The first video briefly introduced the Korean language and the composition of the units in this course.

For my first week, the videos were about learning korean alphabets which are simply called ’hangul’. Hangul is composed of a consonant and a vowel forming one syllable. By learning hangul, I can then proceed with the next video given.

There were also additional materials to practice reading them and graded quizzes.

3.

Points to remember from week 1 is to know their 10 basic vowels and 14 basic consonants. Next, I learned that hangul is written from left to right and top to bottom.

4.

I feel excited and having fun learning Korean because I always want to learn it. I’m quite confident to learn it fast although there are some hard parts. Besides that, the study time is flexible so I’m able to learn it anytime and anywhere.

5.

I think the tricky part of learning a new language is how you are going to pronounce it. I noticed in Korean there were similar pronunciations for some vowels and consonants which made it hard for me to distinguish between them. But, after several practices and writing them, now I can differentiate them.

6.

Two words to describe the first week of my elective posting are challenging and very exciting.

7.

My plan for next week's learning is to watch the provided teaching videos and do the quizzes that have been assigned.

Happy Feet 3: Dancing Doctor (Week 1)

Divyachandricca A/P S Anbarasu
A175140
23 July 2022
*Videos and pictures are below

I have chosen to learn Bharathanatyam under Subathira Subramaniam for my elective posting. Bharathanatyam is one of the forms of Indian classical dance. During my face-to-face dance classes, I have learned and practiced the basic steps known as 'adavus' [videos 1 and 2] and basic hand gestures known as 'mudras' [pictures 3, 4 and 5]. These are the ABCs of Bharathanatyam. Together, these adavus and mudras form dance steps [videos 6, 7 and 8] which will incorporated into dance pieces. My master also taught me how to use the wooden instrument (Tattu Katte) [videos 9 and 10] which is usually used during training for the students to follow the beat when stepping.

From week 1, I would remember how my master used her creativity to combine and modify the simple adavus and mudras to come up with various steps. This also made me realize the importance of having a strong grasp of the basics. Learning to use the instrument also helped me better understand the beats and gave me a clearer picture of how everything comes together in unison to form a well polished step.

I am amazed at my dance masters creativity as she manages to come up with interesting and different steps all the time. When will I be able to do the same? I love to dance therefore, I am really happy to be doing this for my elective posting. Not only am I doing something I enjoy, I am also reaping the benefits of it such as relieving stress, exercising and leading happier, healthier lifestyle. I am also proud that I am contributing to the conservation of my culture in a way.

A difficulty I faced was a lack of stamina. A short while into the class, I would feel very tired and out of breath. I am trying to improve this problem by exercising at home on my own time to build up some stamina. However, during classes, I would take short breaks to take a breather and get a gulp of water. Another concern of mine is that I would forget the things I learn in class. I overcome this by repetitively going through the steps in my head and sometimes, I do it lightly around the house.

2 words for my elective posting progress so far are learning and exciting.

My plan for week 2 would be to help my master teach her junior students and also start learning some steps for a dance piece.

24/7/ 2022

Hi everyone, Im aisyah A174651, my ep project is called Shell : Behind The Scene. In this project, I am working as a fulltime cashier, where I’ll learn and apply all the soft skills and at the same time generate an active income by the end of the month.

What Have I done
In the first week of working, I learn the step by step on how to scan the product, and setting the amount as well as quantity of the fuel product requested by the customer. Other than that, I learn the flow of transaction that commonly occurred in the fuel station, from cash type transaction, to debit/credit card, online merchant payment, local account and local shell chit card. I also learn to manage the receipt and bills, to ensure that the proof of transaction is recorded and organised to simplify the auditing process that’ll be done by the manager in charge.

Points to remember
It is very crucial to be meticulous in setting the fuel and product, as any error can cause a lot of inconvenience to both parties—me and customer itself. Therefore, I always make sure to double check the fuel type, amount and payment method requested by customer before setting it up in the system.
At the same time, it is important to have a very good communication skills to ensure a smooth and comfortable transaction between both parties.

Feelings & Thought
At first I am so nervous, because I’ve no experience being a cashier, and my first experience is at one of the busiest fuel station in the residential area due to its strategic location. I feel the pressure to be fast, but at the same time accurate. I’ve learn a lot from my other workmate who always there to teach and tell me its okay when I made a newbie mistake. They always tell me to stay calm so that I am able to do the correction and explain to the customer clearly.
Other than that, I feel amused and sometimes funny, now that I’ve faced a lot of people from various background.

Points to learn & Practice Now
Stay calm and take the time to think before making a decision.

Difficulties/Concern & coping mechanism?
My main concerns are when I make a mistake that involves credit/debit card transaction, and when the customer say a wrong fuel point thus unconsciously exchange the fuel points with other customer. This mistake require me to do a correct calculation of changes involving both parties, and choose a right transaction method.
It also involves a lot of explaining and communication skills, to ensure the customer understand the situation and avoid any arguments.
Most importantly, when I miscalculated in God knows where/when, that i only realise when I end my shift. During the closing shift, you’ll receive a receipt that shows all your sales and transaction, and eventually the balance amount. It is common to have -/+ balance, but for me personally I feel
quite demotivated when I get a negative amount on my balance, because it means I have short in money, so I need to pay it back with my pay check later.
As my coping response, I will always remind myself to take some time to check and count the amount I’ve received.

2 word to describe elective progress so far
Challenging repetition.

Plan for 2nd Week
Aiming to reduce the negative balance, transaction mistake as well as learning new skills

1. Mus'ab Bin Mohd Hasyahril, A174993, 24/7/2022

2. As the project name above, you can guess what I’m doing with my elective posting. So far, I have done baking cookies. I have done making 7 containers of cookies with a different result. This is my first time doing this, that's why I choose baking as a new skill to learn. It was very fun which I did not expected it to be. I thought baking would be a boring activity but I'm wrong. I'm still experimenting with the result which led me to research and development of my products to be the best at taste. I'm still searching for it for the best ratio of sugar, salt and the perfect temperature and duration of baking. Different ratio will produce different result. I need to choose either crispy or a little bit chewy. I have done my prior research before the baking. I have watched couple videos, read articles and joined online course.

3. A few points to remember within this first week of learning are to be brave enough to try new things, enjoy the processes and cherish the results.

4. I am feeling excited and happy. I am not going to lie but this idea of elective posting is very good. This is because only this time I had a free time to do whatever I’m going to do. This led me to growth mentality.

5. One of the biggest concerns is the cost. Everything from online courses, books, baking tools & raw materials consume money. However, I have a savings for this elective posting. Because nothing is free in this world. Other than that, everything is manageable.

6. Exciting Journey

7. My plan for the next week is to bake the cookies again but with different set of ratios. To find the best cookies in my opinion and taste. I also want to explore deeper about storing and packaging of the cookie’s product. So that I can have a more presentable products when promoting online.

I've completed two lessons with two sections each in my first week of learning Chinese with Coursera. The first section, "Ni hao!" or "Hello!" taught me the fundamental Chinese words for first-time greetings. I then had the opportunity to learn how to state one's nationality. In Chinese, the names of nations are pronounced differently. The third section, "What's the time?" (Xianzai ji dian), explains how to express numbers and time in Chinese. The fourth section, "What is the date today?" teaches me how to inquire about days, dates, and months from other people. Overall, each lesson in the course has taught me a number of useful vocabulary and everyday phrases that I can utilise.

3.

• Xianzai means now, Jiao means to be called, Jintian means today, Xingqi means day, Yue means month, and Hao means date.

• The use of tone marks is important when writing pinyin

• Guo, which meaning country, is not used by Chinese for every nation like Riben is for Japan

4.

1. I am Ang Zi Qi, my matric number is A174612
24/7/2022

2. During this week, I have learnt the basic principles of inventing vowels and consonants of Hangul. Also, I will be able to read and write Hangul, but I need more practice because it is a totally new language for me, so it takes time for me to memorise all the vowels and the consonants.

3. There are ten basic vowels and fourteen basic consonants in Hangul. Thus, we have to remember the pronunciation and the writing of these basic components so that we can understand how to read the words. Also, it’s important to know that a word is formed by one or two consonants and one vowel, and the sequences of the vowel and consonant are either from top to bottom or from left to right.

4. I felt very excited to learn all the basics of the Hangul. By, learning from the very beginning, it helped me to understand this new language in a more systematic way and I would be able to catch up the progress easily. Also, I was going to Asian Medical Studnets’ Conference in South Korea, I hoped that I can learn apply my knowledge there.

5. It was quite difficult to learn the exact pronunciation of the vowels and consonants as well as memorise them. I found it difficult to read out the pronunciation of a word too. Also, even though I can roughly read the words, I still could not understand what is the meaning the phrase, which means I need to continue my learning so that I can go deeper into the meaning.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Fun, interesting

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)
My plan for next week will begin with counting alphabets and basics such as adjectives, noun and verb. I hope that it can help in my daily conversation with Korean!

Always Bake with Passion

Danushvar A/L Maheswaran
A175190
18/07/2022

What have you done?
For my elective posting, I chose to pursue in baking with the aim to learn baking and also break the stereotype that men can bake too. I enrolled myself for a free course in UDE.MY accredit "The Art of Baking with Yuppiechef". I have completed 4 out of 7 sections provided from the course with some research based on the internet, social media and definitely not forgetting my mom's recipe book.

As for week 1, I began with the basics, which was to bake chocolate chip cookies. I watched many videos as well as read on the method and recipes to bake cookies from YouTube, some books and by surfing the net as my final resort. One video that particularly caught my attention was the recipe on Professional Baker Teaches You How To Make CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES by Oh Yum with Anna Olson, a well known baker who also features in Asian Food Channel (AFC) on 703. Anna elucidated the whole baking process smoothly and kept her viewers engaged with her simple and well ordered explanation on baking chocolate chip cookies. Furthermore, my family and I loves her baking so I decided to try out one of her famous chocolate chip cookies recipe that I'm fond of.

My cookies turned out so well that my family really enjoyed it and they were proud of me with my mom's guidance and Anna as well. This positive response from my family members gave me the motivation to try out more challenging recipes in the future. I also sent some cookies to my friends staying nearby via GrabDelivery which I was glad that they too complimented for my cookies. These compliments made me fine-tune my baking skills as we should receive good and bad feedbacks to become a better person in whatever we do.

Points to remember from Week 1

There are surely many things that I learnt from this week and great baking experiences as well as behind the scene events that made me laugh out loud while baking. This includes to leave the butter and egg at room temperature and to chill the cookie dough in the refrigerator for as long as it becomes firm, which would decrease the possibility of over-spreading. This ensures a thicker, more solid cookie with an enhanced flavour as well. Otherwise, I learnt to be more adaptive and have more room for improvisation when things don't go as planned.

Your feelings & thoughts

In a nutshell, I feel quite proud of myself for being able to venture on a new field and acquire a new skill instead of killing my time on video games and watching TV series during my semester break. My thoughts are that I recommend all men to bake and there's nothing to be shy. It's just an extra skill to be added in your resume in the future. As an amateur in baking, I have to be honest that I was pretty skeptical and insecure to even begin my baking journey as this is my first experience but with the guidance from the course and professionals, I managed to bake a scrumptious dessert for me and my family.

1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now

Patience. I have learnt to be very patient and calm during my baking periods. For example, waiting for around 30-40 mins for the cookies to bake, and also serving with beauty. Patience is very useful as we are doctors, we should take our time to talk to patients and treat them well-mannerdly.

Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The main difficulty that I faced was when I used the oven for baking. Apparently, different oven have different temperature adjustment. Unfortunately, the first batch of cookies was not baked enough when I left it for 15 minutes so I left it a little longer but it then turned out over-baked. My second and third batch of cookies turned out well-baked as I adhered to a particular advice by watching the cookies as it baked.

2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Intriguing & Challenging

Your plan for next week (Week 2)

I have outlined my plan for the next weeks and as for week 2, I have planned to bake fudgy brownies and to work on my E-book for the recipes that I've been collecting so far. I'm excited and looking forward to the outcome of the brownies that I'd be baking.
