Reflection on "Connected but Alone?" by Sherry Turkle

Technology had been evolving since the day it was created. From big gadgets to a portable one where we can just slip it on our pockets. We can see everyone have their own phones in the busy street, restaurants, or in any public places. The main reason why we have this technologies is to connect, to communicate. It made our lives easier to be in touch with our friends and families virtually. But are we really connected?

In Sherry Turkles’ ted talk entitled “Connected but alone” she said this statement: “We’re lonely but we’re afraid of intimacy and so from social networks to sociable robots we are designing technologies that will give us the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship” which I agree. Why? because in today’s society we spend most of our time in social media which I know most of us is guilty of. I can stay at home for a week without getting out and socializing because I have my social media to stay connected with my friends. Most of teenagers shares what they feel or what they think in the virtual world rather than sharing it to their friends face to face because like what Turkle said that the feeling of “no one’s listening to me” makes us want to spend more time with machines that seem to care about us. Even at times where it should be a reunion or hangout with friends, some chooses to face their phones and update their social media instead of striking a real-time conversation with them. Virtual communication also lacks real human connection and emotion in a sense that we can send text, emails and whatnot but it doesn’t add up to make a real life conversation.

Look how technology changed the past years and how it changed us as well. From hearing your friends’ thoughts and laughters real time to just sending text and emojis. We are connected by those little gadgets in our hands but in reality we are not. “"Human relationships are rich and they're messy and they're demanding. And we clean them up with technology. We sacrifice conversation for mere connection.” Which is true and we are forgetting the beauty of having a genuine conversation and how it stirs up more emotion and connection. Let’s spend more time with our family and friends rather than facing a temporary connection with the virtual world.
