Gas exchange is how the body regulates the different gases in your body. In order to maintain homeostasis, the body may work with the respiratory system to regulate the amount or frequency of gases entering the blood. Gas exchange may also involve the regulation of the circulatory system.

The body may try to increase the amount of oxygen in the system by increasing breathing rate, or even increasing heart rate in order to get the blood to absorb more oxygen. The body needs to meet the demands of the tissue. Mountain climbers, who go into low air pressure areas, are usually those who are affected by this.
