Apply our Hyrox learning to T&L (what we learned)

Through an intensive and gruelling session, the members of our group studied and aligned the spirit of Hyrox with our school values that can be applied to inform our teaching practices:

Hyrox is an intimidating competition, just like how the national exams will look and feel like to our students.

Fitness of Mind and Body

Training for Hyrox is physically demanding. So is growing up and striving for success to be a Passionate Learner, Resilient Leader and Gracious Citizen. We need to be fit in our mind to steel ourselves to be disciplined and put in consistent effort in Hyrox and for students in life.

Integrity

Having integrity means staying true to our word and doing what we should do, regardless of whether anyone is watching. This is true in training and having sportsmanship in Hyrox. For students, integrity can be developed through acting in ways that are aligned to their purpose and not being distracted by merry making or pleasure seeking.

Consistency and commitment in our training and for students, having and maintaining a healthy and balanced school and study life.

Respect (for self and others)

Respecting self in hyrox means we listen to our bodies. Not embracing struggles and challenges is cheating ourselves. Pushing too hard without regard for your limits can lead to injury, undermining long-term progress

In a training environment, respecting fellow athletes—whether through encouraging words, healthy competition, or sharing tips—creates a supportive, positive atmosphere that fosters personal growth. The same is true for students in becoming supportive peer support structures that promote companionship and peer accountability

Excellence in all our endeavours

Setting noble but realistic and achievable targets. If we have no vision and do not set targets that motivate us, we will inevitably fall short. Just like how our students should also set targets in ECG and Leader in me.

Discipline in Preparation - Following a well-structured training program that balances strength, endurance, and functional fitness and prioritizing consistency over short bursts of intense effort. The same is true for the academic journey.

Tracking progress through metrics like run times, row splits, or workout completion rates to identify areas for improvement just like how and what WA is for.

Continuous Improvement

Reflecting on previous races or training sessions to identify what went well and what could be improved.

Seeking feedback from coaches, peers, or personal data to refine techniques and strategies.

Staying curious and open to learning new skills or improving weak areas.

The idea of a dedicated food pick-up point inspired us to reimagine our school canteen. Introducing a food locker system for pre-ordered meals can streamline meal distribution and reduce queue congestion. By allowing students to pre-order meals and collect them quickly, they save time and avoid long queues, enhancing their dining experience. To start small, this system can be piloted in the staff pantry, allowing teachers to experience its benefits firsthand and provide feedback.

Growth Mindset & Resilience

Learning contemporary dance involves trial and error, persistence, and overcoming frustration.

Link this to academic learning by emphasizing that mastery takes practice, mistakes are part of the process, and improvement comes with effort.

Example: In Math or Science, normalize making errors and revising solutions, just as dancers refine their moves over time.

2. Observation & Feedback

In dance, students learn by watching, analyzing, and giving constructive feedback.

Apply this by having students observe each other’s work, provide peer feedback, and refine their own understanding based on others’ input.

Example: In English, students can workshop their essays like dancers adjust choreography based on peer comments.

3. Collaboration & Adaptability

Dance requires working in sync with others and adjusting to unexpected changes.

Encourage teamwork in problem-solving activities, simulations, or group projects, emphasizing the importance of adapting strategies dynamically.

4. Embodying Abstract Concepts

Contemporary dance often expresses emotions or abstract ideas through movement.

Use this idea by encouraging students to find non-traditional ways to express knowledge (e.g., using metaphors, visuals, or storytelling).

Example: In Literature, students can discuss how a novel’s themes could be represented visually, musically, or spatially, even if they don’t physically dance them.

5. Creative Risk-Taking

Dancers experiment with movement and take risks in performance.

Foster a classroom culture where students feel safe to take intellectual risks, share ideas, and explore creative solutions without fear of failure.

Example: In Science, students can design experiments with novel approaches rather than following set procedures.

Set Clear, Manageable Goals

Start with small, achievable objectives each session (e.g., “By the end of today, everyone should be able to perform a simple 8-count phrase.”).

Gradually increase complexity as confidence builds.

Keep sessions focused (e.g., technique, improvisation, expression).

2. Use a Layered Approach (From Simple to Complex)

Begin with basic warm-ups (gentle stretches, simple movements).

Introduce isolated movements before combining them into sequences.

Build towards a short, simple choreography by the end of each session.

3. Encourage a Safe & Supportive Learning Environment

Many may feel awkward or self-conscious—normalize mistakes and make learning fun.

Emphasize progress over perfection and celebrate small wins.

Create a judgment-free zone where teachers feel safe to experiment.

4. Use Analogies & Relatable Examples

Link movements to things they already understand (e.g., “Think of this arm movement like painting a large stroke on a canvas.”).

If they struggle with a step, compare it to an everyday action.

5. Balance Learning Styles

Some will learn by watching, others by doing—demonstrate movements multiple times.

Break down movements verbally and visually.

Provide individual feedback, but keep the pace moving so no one gets too fixated on getting it “perfect.”

6. Make It Fun & Purposeful

Include games, improvisation exercises, or simple partner work.

Keep sessions light-hearted and engaging—this isn’t about becoming professional dancers, but about learning something new together.

7. Connect to Their Teaching Practice

End each session with a short reflection:

“How did today’s session challenge you?”

“What insights can we bring into our own classrooms?”

“How does learning dance compare to learning an academic subject?”

Observations from this session

Warming up in dancing typically focuses on preparing specific muscle groups and joints, that can be different from the ones commonly used in sports, to be stretched and flexible as opposed to getting the heart pumping. In classrooms, we could tailor our “brain warm-ups”’, such as with guiding questions to stretch the “muscle groups” that are necessary for specific subjects. In between lessons, students could go from creative thinking in language to critical thinking for mathematics. The thinking styles are different for both so perhaps it would be good to have a way to help students “warm-up” when transitioning between subjects.

Memory work: For this session, we broke the whole dance down into sets of 8 beats and learnt 4 beats by 4 beats, grouping a set of moves together. Professional instructors will also make use of mnemonics drawing comparisons between dance moves and other actions in daily life, unofficially naming the moves after them. Then, as the dancers run through the performance, the instructors only need to mention the unofficial name of the move (e.g. “digging”, “aeroplane”) to remind them which moves are coming next.

Having a rhythm for dances also helps with coordination and teaching. Things like saying “5,6,7,8” or counting the beats as the dance goes on helps everyone to stay together. Maybe there’s some way to bring rhythm to lessons so that everyone can follow the same pace and stay on track.

As someone with no fundamentals and experience with dancing, I realise that I find myself following the instructors moves limb by limb, as if I am copying a model answer from a whiteboard word for word. I do not have a sense of flow with the moves because I am only learning action by action individually without learning what they look like as they transition between each other. To instruct students how to write and express answers, perhaps going through “limb by limb” can be useful to scaffold the answers, ie what words or terms must be present in the answer, but how each term flows or relates to other words must also be explained to get a coherent explanation that is not just a blast of keywords.

Dancing in front of a mirror helped to provide a literal reflection to see how our dance movements look with immediacy. Oftentimes you can notice students writing their answers and moving on to the next question without looking back and assessing whether what they are writing is correct or understandable by another person. In dance, where the frame of reference is the ideal performance shown by the instructor, it is easy to look at your own movement in the mirror and notice what is not as good as the ideal, but students may not have a frame of reference when they are doing work, writing essays or presenting answers. Maybe a benchmark is good to show students so that they can self-assess in comparison with the “model” to notice their own errors.

When dancers have been following the instructor step-by-step, they will eventually begin to rely on the instructor to provide the next moves for them, and not naturally remember the order of moves on their own. Once the instructor had stepped away, none of us could remember how to do the dance on our own. Giving model answers can be useful for providing a benchmark but only up to a certain extent. We should not let students not attempt questions because they are waiting for the model answer.

Citadels is a quick 20 - 30 mins game for 4 to 8 players that requires them to manage their "money" to "build" districts (which are cards). Throughout the game, they can choose different roles (e.g. Assassin, Thief, King, Magicians e.t.c.) which have different abilities to help you or hinder others.

E21CC in Citadels

Critical and Inventive Thinking

Citadels encourages players to think strategically and adapt their plans based on the actions of other players. This stimulates critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as players need to make decisions with limited information, anticipate others' moves, and manage resources wisely.

The game’s role selection mechanics allow players to devise unique strategies depending on the combination of roles they choose, requiring creative thinking to outwit opponents.

Communication Skills

Players must communicate their intentions, form alliances, or bluff, especially when selecting roles or executing actions. This encourages verbal communication and negotiation skills, as players often need to convince others of their motives or intentions.

The social nature of the game requires players to articulate strategies clearly, ask questions, or express concerns, promoting active listening and effective communication.

Collaboration and Social Emotional Learning

Although Citadels is competitive, it includes moments where temporary alliances or collaborations can be formed. This teaches players to work with others, balance self-interest with group goals, and negotiate or compromise.

Players must manage emotions such as frustration when things go awry or excitement when plans succeed, promoting self-regulation and emotional intelligence. The interactions also require empathy, as players need to understand others' motivations and emotional states during gameplay.

I used Pair Chat to create a script and uploaded it to Gamma. Gamma helped me create these slides, and I changed the prompts several times to ensure the sequence of the content made sense. However, the downside is that some of the words are too difficult for students to read, and I cannot add Hanyu Pinyin on top of the words (adding Pinyin at the side of the words would make the slides look very messy). Now, the students can refer to this step-by-step guide when writing argumentative essays. Next, I hope to use AI to generate a video with these slides, so this can benefit those students who cannot read.

Review of PLT sessions

So far, we have completed 2 physical sessions - one in the school gym to try out Hyrox related performance tasks that we adapted (Adaptive Thinking) using our limited equipment. In the next session, we also adapted the exercises so that we could train at West Coast Park. We also found out how AI can be used, like in training for Hyrox, to train learners in basketball - see post above.

What are your team’s next steps?

a. Plan for an LJ to AiRENA basketball academy on 22 July

b. Confirm who are the participants for the actual Hyrox competition in November

Issac and Rasull considering, Hyrox race is on 29/30 November 2025

b. How do we bring the learning into the classroom?

i) Continue to be adaptive (CAIT) in the way we approach learning so that learning continues even when we do not operate under optimal conditions (e.g. train in WCP even if we do not have Hyrox equipment)

ii) Use of AI to enhance learning - real life eg and possible LJ to AiRena basketball academy to see how AI is used to provide detailed, individualised feedback to improve performance tasks; video recording of students' Ukulele practice and using it to analyse their performance, use of AI for language based feedback in EL and Literature classes.

How will ideas be implemented in class or school-wide?

a. Demonstrate and be explicit about the development and use of E21CC and Values as a way of life that undergirds lifelong learning and in the way we conduct ourselves.

b. Use AI more deeply for individualised feedback. For example, in videoing performance tasks like in Music. For cognitive tasks like in the learning of EL and Lit, we can use AI to provide individualised feedback for essay writing and grammar (e.g. Gemini, ChatGPT)

c. If there is a youth category for Hyrox in November, we can also publicise and share our learning story. Students can be inspired to join us in Hyrox and live the Hyrox life together!

How would you like to present your work at Learning Fest on 18 Nov 2025?

a. Sharing funny moments of our adaptive and inventive thinking in training as well as how we have applied these in our classrooms.

b. Design a hands-on activity to develop CAIT: e.g. Hyrox performance task for staff to apply CAIT and have fun performing. Staff's attempts will also be video-ed to demonstrate how we use AI to provide individualised feedback.

c. Applying CAIT (especially Adaptive and Inventive Thinking) as well as FIRE values to our learning and daily life.

What resources or help will you need?

we need more love

As an FCE teacher, I find that acrylic painting demonstrates the value of sequencing—the skill of structuring steps logically. Applying this to lesson design ensures smooth progression, minimizes wasted resources, and reduces student frustration. At the same time, painting fosters creative problem-solving (out-of-the-box thinking), which enhances the ability to adapt and innovate when planning or modifying lesson activities.

Like how artists begin with a composition plan (deciding what to include, placement, and how each part contributes to the whole), design of lessons should define clear learning objectives and aligns activities that pairs well with the objectives. This structured approach can also be applied to lab sessions, where students are guided to plan ahead and consider the steps they need to take, and the equipment required before beginning the experiment.

In art, an error can alter the entire mood or message of the artwork. Similarly, in science, a minor measurement mistake can impact the outcome of an entire experiment. This comparison helps students understand the importance of precision in following procedures, recording data, and using correct units.

Review of PLT session:

Spoke at length of various ideas (AI in our T&L, chatbot in Admin, AI-based activity at Labrador Park similar to HiddenSg Jewel activity).

Felt that the HiddenSg-esque activity might be too ambitious for us, even more so as there is no vendor available to take care of the AI aspect.

Members shared we seem to want to do different things under the umbrella of AI (T&L, Chatbot, AI in SLS) - need to find something to tie everyone's idea together.

Finally decided on coming up with a Chatbot [via PairChat Assistant] that can help staff in terms of Admin-GO-related qns as well as SLS- queries.

There was a suggestion in getting in touch with an Assoc Prof of NIE for our LJ as her area of expertise is Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) and learning analytics. She is also widely recognised as the "go-to expert" for innovative techno-pedagogical design for collaborative learning in authentic classrooms.

How do we bring the learning into the classroom?

We will focus on using the chatbot to help our colleagues

Conducting its use as a live demonstration will show how we use a chatbot for specific functions (e.g. answer queries)

While using the chatbot, we will also verbalising our thinking (e.g., "Let’s see if this response is accurate. I’ll cross-check it with another source."). This action models critical evaluation and promotes digital literacy even within our colleagues.

We will discuss limitations of the chatbot and emphasise that chatbots can make errors, and that responses need human judgment, fact-checking, and critical thinking.

How can we share with our colleagues?

We will need to set up the chatbot first and upload the information we have (anything related to SLS & GO)

We will then have to test it out using precise prompt engineering, taking on roles of teachers who have queries on using SLS as well as things to ask our colleagues at the GO.

During the Learning Fest, we would get our colleagues to have a hands-on experience by trying it out.

We met at Tsujiri Premium at One Holland Village instead of Habit because there was not enough space there.

At the cafe, we tried a variety of Matcha drinks to find out how it is that given the same base of Matcha, it can help to create different drinks. As we were consuming our drinks, we discussed how rest is important in Wellness. We learnt that there are seven different types of rest and two types of rest that we are interested in are creative rest and social rest.

Creative rest is about restoring inspiration as it gives your mind and senses a break from overuse and allows space for wonder, beauty, and imagination. Without it, people can feel stuck, uninspired, or mentally blocked.

Social rest is rest that we get when we are with people who don't require you to perform or pretend. You are free from the pressure to please or be "on".

It got us thinking about how such rest can support executive functioning as students can have more cognitive flexibility which is the ability to adjust to new information, changing situations and different perspectives.

In a lesson design, how do we create space and time to allow for creative rest so that students do not feel overwhelmed by the long hours and also different lessons that they have to go through.

As teachers, it is our hope that students learn well in class and by intentionally designing rest into our own lives and in lesson design, hopefully it can enhance the wellness of both students and staff.

Leveraging on AI to guide students to customise for themselves a creative rest plan so that students can take a meaningful screentime break in between lessons which is not disruptive.

Intentionally designing for rest within our lessons and lives creates mind space to develop 21CC. For example, how children are engaged in learning something new in that mind space facilitates developing adaptive thinking and creative thinking (knowledge, skills, mindset) while they learn through new experiences, hence becoming more flexible and courageous next time when faced with unknown situations/ boredom.

As a group, we were struck by how much history lives in this quiet space. Standing at the pillboxes and learning about Lieutenant Adnan’s final stand made us feel both proud and humbled. We discussed how different the park must have looked during the war, and how courage can come in many forms. Experiencing history where it happened made it feel more personal and meaningful. We left with a deeper respect for those who fought for our country, and a shared sense of gratitude that brought us closer—not just as students, but as Singaporeans.

The dialogue session examined how AI can enhance teaching and learning, with emphasis on self-directedness and 21st-century competencies. Speakers shared projects, challenges, and directions for responsible AI integration.

Key Takeaways:

AI for Learning: Chatbots like SALiS, built on school content, improved self-revision and boosted grades by 10–15%. Beyond task completion, AI can nurture transferable skills.

Student Development: AI helps assess and strengthen skills such as critical and adaptive thinking, offering scalable feedback and supporting holistic growth. Risk remains that students engage with AI passively.

Teaching and Pedagogy: The PIC model (Passive → Interactive → Co-creative) guides lesson design. Teachers should model effective AI use and design experiences that foster deeper engagement.

Teacher Training: Professional development is needed to move beyond productivity uses, with focus on human-centered AI, inquiry-based learning, and AI literacy.

Broader Use & Ethics: AI in higher education shows potential for personalized learning, conversational agents, and automating tasks. Ethical, responsible adoption with clear boundaries is essential.

Next Steps:

Pilot curriculum-based AI chatbots.

Evaluate AI’s role in skill transfer and 21st-century competencies.

Develop a teacher integration model and provide targeted professional development.

Strengthen school–research collaboration for responsible, impactful AI use.

Continuing on what we shared last year, we are moving with our plans.

Our project titled as KRconnect is an AI chatbot designed to help students and stakeholders learn about the school’s layout, key locations, historical facts, and sustainability efforts. Through interacting with the chatbot, students learn how to craft effective prompts, verify information, and think critically.

The project supports E21CC competencies by integrating educational technology and treating the environment as the third teacher. It also opens opportunities to apply the chatbot abilities in daily lessons and school-based learning trails, equipping students with transferable skills to experience meaningful and innovative lessons.

The team hopes to connect everyone in KR with everything around KR. KR Connect will be designed with elements of curiosity, inquiry, and fun, contributing to a strong sense of belonging to KR for all.
