Canal & River Trust – STEM & Careers opportunities for 2026/27

The Canal & River Trust is planning its STEM and careers engagement with schools across England and Wales for the 2026/27 academic year – and they'd love to hear what's already in your calendar.

The Canal & River Trust is the charity that is a guardian for around 2,000 miles of canals, rivers, reservoirs and associated infrastructure across England and Wales.

Behind those waterways is a hugely diverse workforce – from engineers, ecologists and hydrologists to environmental specialists, heritage professionals, construction teams, IT and operations.

Their national STEM Programme uses waterways as living classrooms, connecting young people with real-world STEM, the people and careers behind it, and the education, skills and employment pathways available to them.

Last academic year, they reached over 10,000+ young people through 100+ STEM events and Career Linked activities alone, as are just getting started

If you have dates planned for Careers Fairs, STEM/Careers Days or Weeks, employer encounters, enrichment days, curriculum activities, sustainability/environmental projects or outdoor learning, please share them with the Trust.

They have over seventy STEM Ambassadors across the country that represent green skills / careers across engineering, ecology, hydrology, environment, IT, construction, heritage and more. Their ambition is to create meaningful opportunities that connect young people with real people, green careers, curriculum learning and their local waterways.

All of their school STEM and careers engagement is free of charge and designed to complement schools' existing careers and curriculum provision – including activity aligned with Gatsby Benchmarks 2, 4 and 5, EQUALEX, and curriculum learning through real-world STEM, sustainability, environment and green careers contexts.

They've created a short form where you can share upcoming opportunities and, where possible, upload your 2026/27 Careers/STEM calendar.

⏱️ It should take no more than 5 minutes: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/NLjmUawuC8

Where possible, please give around 10–12 weeks' notice for proposed activities. This gives them the best opportunity to identify suitable STEM Ambassadors and develop meaningful support around your school, students and intended learning.

Every young person develops valuable skills throughout their lives.

https://skillsengland.blog.gov.uk/2026/10/05/helping-young-people-turn-experience-into-opportunity-introducing-the-employability-skills-framework-by-gemma-marsh/

Whether it is balancing study with caring responsibilities, captaining a sports team, volunteering in their community, organising events, or completing coursework projects, young people gain capabilities that employers consistently tell us matter in the workplace.

Yet too often these skills go unrecognised.

When I speak to young people, they tell me that they struggle to explain how their experiences demonstrate skills that are relevant to work, while employers can find it difficult to identify potential in candidates who have limited employment history. To help bridge that gap, Skills England is today publishing the Employability Skills Framework.

The framework builds on Skills England’s Standard Skills Classification and other skills frameworks including Skills Builder and the Essential Digital Skills Framework.

It is available for everyone to use. We will continue to evolve it through further engagement to understand the needs to employers, young people, Strategic Authorities, providers and other stakeholders.

Creating a shared language for employability

We have identified 13 key employability skills:

For each skill, the Employability Skills Framework shows:

what the skill practically means at the start of a career

examples of how a young person may have developed it through education or everyday experiences

what employers can look for during recruitment and how employers can support further development in the workplace

what the skills mean in an AI enabled workplace.
