A Picture tells a Thousand Words is an assessment tool that allows teachers to take a photograph of the students while they are doing an activity. The students are then given the photograph and are told to describe what they are doing during the activity. The students use the photographs for class discussion and what they were thinking while doing the activity, what they would change looking at the picture, and comparing their photograph with other students and what they did for the hands-on activity.

We will have the students test the hardness of rocks by having them scratch the different rocks with their fingernail, a nail, penny and a piece of glass. We will have them record which materials scratched which rocks. Students will test and record the reflectivity of the rocks by tilting the rock under the light in the classroom. Students will record the color of the rocks based of physical observation. Finally, students will test and record the magnetism of the rocks by putting the rock next to a magnet and observing whether or not they are attracted to each other. All of the students observations will be recorded in a pre made lab report.
