I think that families and students need active engagment from the teachers and admin because a parent or student is not going to know there expectations.

Need:

A quality education. Teachers who believe in their ability to succeed. Material that resonates with them. Encouragement, support and structure. Opportunity to express self and excel.

While I think needs are extremely varied, and it requires knowledge of the students and their communities, I have recently began meeting with a high school teacher at Carver. He talked to me the other day about how his students are in a desert of hope. They need hope for their future, as well as hope in their abilities to get them there. It becomes my role as the teacher then to help give them hope, not only through in class procedures, instruction, and learning, but in advocacy work to help them be able truly realize the hopes you are trying to instill in them.

Students and families desire to have passionate educators that are willing to go beyond just teaching. I know this because it what I desired as a student. The classroom space may be the most comfortable and safe space for some students to exist as they are as children and students.

They need someone who is actively engaged in the childs educational goals and social emotional goals

The students want to feel a sense of their culture throughout their time in school at some point. It can be an assembly or a class project. Also, I feel as though the families need to feel a sense of inclusion when it comes to their child's education. -Holloman

Student and parents need a good communication system that is respectful of both.

Students and parents need to know the fundamental norms of the classroom/

Students and parents should have a relationship with the teacher.

Parents should feel welcome in the classroom.

Students should understand that their classroom is a community, and they are the members that build the positive or negative parts of the community.

Students and their families need the educations system to prepare their child for adulthood.
They need resources to address distractions so they can learn and get the most out of their educational opportunities
school should compensate for what is lacking at home

Students and families need consistent communication regarding their education. They need to constantly be updated and feel involved in their child’s education. Teachers also need to communicate what they are teaching and responsibilities of the students so that their is a measurement of their learning outside of tests/exams.

I think that what families and students need in a classroom varies substantially, but one need that I think is universal is the need for professional transparency from a teacher or educator.
