The first issue that comes to mind is healthcare policy. Of course, there are many more issues to be discussed besides just healthcare— gun laws, the voting process, and laws concerning the environment, just to name a few; but here is an example of people’s thinking on this issue. Many Americans feel that our healthcare system is seriously lacking and question why the American government is not taking action to mirror what many people view as a successful system, like Canada or Great Britain. My research question is, “Is this a fair question?” More specifically, “Are Great Britain and Canada fairly comparable to the United States?” My research problem would be to find out how the United States differ from other countries. I will be focusing on the laws of each country therefore I believe it is important to analyze the differences in government, legal system, and even the break down of specific laws to obtain a clear picture of how they compare. I will be narrowing my research to comparing the U.S. to Canada and Great Britain, whom both operate under a democratic system of government of some kind. My research answer will not be obvious until after I have conducted a large majority of my research, but I predict the answer will be, “No, it is not a fair question.” I predict that I will find that even though each of these countries function under a similar type of government, the individual framework of each country is what allows for certain laws and policies to succeed where as in another country without the same framework the same law or policy would most likely fail. This information would help Americans understand why the United States government is not jumping to implement laws or policy that has been successful in other countries.
