Since it is a picture book, with the strategy "Focusing on text" we can teach how the text mirrors the meaning of the pictures and even how the arrangement of text shows how it can be read.

We would use the strategy of consciousness of response so children can share with the class their thoughts about the book, their favourite parts or dislikes about the piece.

We also like the strategy focusing on the text, because it can create a good environment in which students can discuss how the text is complemented with the images and to what extent they complement each other.

We suggest teaching the picture book “Boo Made You Jump” by using the strategy of focusing on connections. We would encourage children to compare the book with other horror stories, for examples in terms of setting. Then, we would pose a question: Does this story makes you scared? Does the scary castle remind you of another story?

In this way children put their critical thinking at play while resorting to their own experience and emotions.

In a literature workshop in a public school with third-grade students, we would apply the strategy of "duplicating the reader experience". We would immerse the students in the story by dimming the lights or closing the curtains while we read the text with a tone that creates suspense.
