Entering the "Freiwilliger Durchgang" from the busy Lerchenfelderstrtaße, I immediately feel a relief. It offers a sense of intimacy and dispels the anonymity that clings to us in other parts of the city.

Daniël Siegersma - Paternoster lift

The oldest paternoster in Vienna. I feel this form of elevator plays with the notion of the anxiety of commiting to enter the lift. It's a continues lift that in essence has a function to reduce the waiting time for the user. For me a hidden treasure as I feel the way one uses such a elevator is a fascinating metaphor to apply to other parts of the city, specifically places of elevation in masses (I have couple more places where they still have this lift in use but I feel this one will let us in to check it out)

No visitor at the part of the Brunnenmarkt called Cheese Paradise can hide from the attentive eye of this "cheese prophet". Placed on one of the shop's roof he is overlooking the crowd beneath remaining practically invisible for them. It took me half a year to notice him for the first time among the bright-colored cheese stands and rain-collecting visors. Looking at him makes me think about old-timey street sellers and shops with giant displays of the goods they sell. One can only wonder what secrets of the market life he keeps to himself. Old iron bridge (built 1900-1902) for pedestrians connecting parts of the 15th district otherwise separated by the train tracks of Westbahnhof. Great place for sunsets and watching trains from above. Also used as hangout in public space (especially during Covid lockdowns).

Dadlerpark, a tiny universe. With the typical cages and groups from young mothers with children, the younger generation who wants to play something. And the dog area. A place like almost other parks. But, Next to it is this little spot. It’s just at one corner where you leave or enter to the park. There is a table and a bench, trees and a lot of bushes.

this place was vacant for quite some years (as far as I know). I have noticed it for the first time maybe two years ago.

when I first discovered it, people from the gräzl were using its roofed entrance (like in the photo) as an informal place of exchange of goods. whenever I would pass, new things had appeared and the old ones (even weird stuff) were gone. I liked seeing and documenting this, for being nice for the community yet very approachable as it had no organisers.

since this summer, kunsthaus wien has used the space as a "Pop-Up Community Center". One of the first things to happen was, that the "goods-exchange-station" stayed - but it was moved into fancy shelves inside, so only reachable under the surveillance of an employee of kunsthaus and only during opening hours.

I wonder what the place will be like after the end of kunsthaus' summer program.

I found this tree architecture when i was early for class one day. I was moved by this "tree grow through hole" design for a short moment but then when i realized how artificial it is for nature to grow through our buildings. This inorganic way to "build with nature" and used tree as decorations in city planning, like how the tree are distant from other trees, somehow also distant us with nature.

The sensation of spotting a gum ball machine as a child and asking your parents for a coin. The anticipation to see which color you would receive - maybe its your favorite or maybe you're disappointed - but nonetheless this moment was a point of unanticipated excitement. Often I see these machines now, and the candy looks sad and old. But the experience and associations of memories brings me joy.

What if these machines dispensed something else?

A small 3D printed object - a poem - a thought - a secret - a memory?

What if I could revisit this sensation of anticipation and excitement I once had as a child?

The Armin Centre is a 1-euro shop where you can really find everything. For some it may be hell, for others a necessity. What it certainly doesn't have are too few stimuli. Both the many things and the intense chemical odour can knock you out.

This house from the Gründerzeit era has been rebuilt many times and does not try to hide the phases of its life. What's strange is that a part of its corner looks like it's been replaced by an even older piece. Its apperarance reminds me of Diocletan's Palace in Split, which is often used as a reference in today's architectural discourse about rebuliding instead of tearing down buildings.

On the 15th December 2023 i was walking through the streets at 2.30 in the night, following curiously the sounds of singing birds, which seemed to me so absurd in that season and time, that I even though that they must be artificial, but they were not. Touched to tears I stood there for a long time listening to the strange phenomenon –feeling happy and sad at the same simultaneously.
