Thomas (Dylan O'Brien), a teenager, arrives in a glade at the center of a giant labyrinth. Like the other youths dumped there before him, he has no memory of his previous life. Thomas quickly becomes part of the group and soon after demonstrates a unique perspective that scores him a promotion to Runner status -- those who patrol the always-changing maze to find an escape route. Together with Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), the only female, Thomas tries to convince his cohorts that he knows a way out.
(left to right, Gally, Teresa, Thomas, Minho, and Newt)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maze_Runner_(film)

Thomas: The protagonist of the story. He arrives in the Glade with no knowledge of who he is or was. He only remembers his name and nothing else about his life. Thomas proves to be brave, loyal, and clever, with isolated telepathic powers and a very limited memory of previous knowledge of the Maze. Soon after arriving in the Glade, Thomas makes both friends and enemies and proves a leader among the boys.

Minho: One of the first Gladers, and therefore one of the most senior, Minho is a sometimes brash but dependable leader. As Keeper of the Runners, he is charged with overseeing the daily searching and mapping of the Maze, a dangerous task. Although he and Thomas do not get along upon meeting they come to be close allies after becoming trapped in the Maze overnight.

Newt: Named after Sir Isaac Newton, Newt is a tall, muscular boy with long blonde hair who operates as second in command in the Glade. Sarcastic and direct, Newt befriends Thomas early on and spends time explaining the way the Glade and Maze work to him. As Alby's leadership begins to erode, Newt steps in to fill the gap and support Thomas's plans to escape.

Teresa: A teenage girl who mysteriously arrives in the Glade the day after Thomas. She tells everyone that everything is about to change, before slipping into a coma. Thomas is sure that he knows Teresa from before, but cannot remember. Later, it is revealed that she shares a telepathic link with Thomas. They become close friends over the course of the novel and Teresa helps Thomas and Chuck deactivate the Maze during their escape. She is the only female character in almost the entire book, yet she serves little purpose except to catalyze plot and Thomas's character development.

Davé, Amit.

The movie took over a large farm in Jackson, La. for its 44-day shoot. Despite providing ample space for all that running, there were a few problems (of the venomous sort) with the location. The grassy setting was littered with snakes – there were so many that production had to hire special snake wranglers to come in. Twenty-five in total were removed, the largest apparently being a 5-foot rattlesnake. Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Newt) told Vulture that one of his castmates was even bit by one of snakes. Luckily, however, it was a non-venomous.
read more at: http://uproxx.com/movies/the-maze-runner-7-facts/3/

At times, Thomas comes off like a whiny little malcontent—especially in the beginning of the book when all he wants is for the other boys to answer his inquiries. Being simple in a complex world is kinda refreshing, though. As readers we always know where we stand with Thomas. His decisions are mostly based on a single driving factor: he wants to figure out the Maze. He wants to be a Runner because it'll help solve the Maze; he wants the girl to wake up and explain things because it'll help solve the Maze; he wants Frypan to make him some gall-dang lunch because it'll help him solve the Maze. You get the idea.

Shmoop Editorial Team.
