Second Module - Prevalence & Impact of Trauma

I found the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) study to be very powerful. It is important as a future educator that I understand that more children have an ACE score than don't. The greater the Ace score, the greater chance for serious health issues. So often people are treated poorly for health issues that are caused primarily because of environmental issues, which they have no control. The module stresses the importance of students feeling safe and trusting their teacher and school staff. However I have yet to witness a school wide drive to strive to meet these two critical needs. From my short experience in public schools, class management and school structure seem to be at the forefront of the classrooms focus.

Third Module - Social & Emotional

Social & Emotional learning is so vital, and is proven to improve academic performance of students. I enjoyed the slide regarding teaching vocabulary about emotions, because so many young students don't know how to explain how they feel. However I do have mixed-feelings regarding the statement "use your words'' when talking with a student who is struggling. I say this because many suggestions multiple ways such as drawing, physical activity, writing, music, or however the student best can express themselves would be more thoughtful and inclusive?

First Activity - Dr. Nadine Burke Harris Video

I have worked in healthcare specifically critical care for twelve years now, and witnessed the terrible treatment of patients with high ACE scores. I remember an eighteen year old having his second heart surgery from substance abuse. He lived in a terrible group home and had absolutely no family. Even with knowing this background information about the patient, I still witnessed doctors and nurses blaming this barley adult for his situation. Imagine if the hospital had counselors who could talk to these types of patients about their trauma and helped them heal not just physically but emotionally as well. I am so grateful and hopeful when I see GOOD healthcare workers like Dr.Nadine Burke Harris.

Second Activity -The Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture

It's hard not to see the very obvious correlations between corporate America culture and white supremacy culture. It's also quite easy to spot the similarities between academic culture and white supremacy culture as well. I was curious about the antidotes for “power Hoarding” because I feel that is an issue I see frequently in classrooms and schools. “Antidotes: include power sharing in your organization's values statement; discuss what good leadership looks like and make sure people understand that a good leader develops the power and skills of others;”

I believe that as a teacher I should include power sharing with lesson plans, themes and curriculum material. As well as discussions that include the students expectations of the teacher, and if those are being met.
