During our last round of observations, the principal emphasized idea that the students need to be aware of the goal of the lesson and even come up with the goal before they begin. The idea of having "I can" statements on the board, along with being in their notebooks show the students what the learning goal is before they even begin. They have a chance to understand what is expected of them and then show off what they know and what they learned from the lesson.

Having students publish their work in their notebooks and having the students be able to work with partners/groups to show off their work develops a sense of ownership. Student will have an increased motivation to do well if they know they will be showing their work off to their teachers, parents, and peers.

I think this is the most valuable aspect of the INBs. Students are able to enjoy social interaction while they are learning new concepts and practicing previously taught ideas. It is so important to have them use problem solving skills and group work skills in the real world. The group work that goes along with INBs supports all of this! Students are also able to stay engaged in hands-on activities so they are not bored in the classroom. The "idle hands are a devil's workshop" quote is very meaningful to me as I am often looking for ways to prevent my students from saying "I'm bored."

This is true, but it is worth a try with some students. Sometimes just using different strategies for teaching the same material is all a student needs to be successful!

I have witness this first-hand when teachers in my district tried using INBs for ELA. The students spent so much time cutting and gluing, that so much time was lost! We have found that having sheets pre-cut is a way to avoid this. But, with that being said, cutting and gluing is a real-life skill that needs to be practiced in order for mastery to occur. The kids just need more practice with this, and it won't be as much as a hassle when it comes time for INBs.
