Clara and her family Immigrate to New York in 1909 in hopes for a better life. However, her father is unable to find any work, and Clara must support her family as a garment worker. Working long hours for little pay while taking night classes, Clara becomes frustrated with her work conditions. As Clara gains support from her coworkers, they start a peaceful union in hopes of recieving  fair pay and a reduction in hours. Clara leads union strikes and is left with broken ribs, bruises, and no job. However, she continues to pick herself up and stand for what she believes in. Clara rallies the women to create the largest walkout of women workers in United States history. Clara is a hero and her efforts spreads across the nation. More strikes and walkouts occur, the movement gains media coverage and women everywhere are dontaing to the cause. Claras brave efforts continue, and eventually buisness owners agreed to raise their pay and reduce hours. As her story ends we are left with the fact that even girls five-feet tall can have the bravest hearts.

In addition, to these issues the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom's educational affiliation selects books that embodies stories of individuals that dedicate their lives to figthing injustice and the strength gained when people work together peacefully (Colabucci, 2017).

Clara Lemlich is a strong force to be reckoned with. "Look out, New york!" (Markel, 2013) the author exclaims forshadowing how impactful this young girl will be. Clara immediately proves to be strong when we learn that she has to balance long work hours and night school in order to support her family. Clara is forced to become an adult, and uses her maturity  to stand for what she knows is right. In 2014, "Brave Girl" won the Jane Addams Childrens' Book Awards and I could not agree more. This is a true story about a Clara Lemlich a 23 year old Ukranian immigrant that lead an uprising of 20,000 people ("Clara Lemlich and the Uprising of the 20,000"). Getting paid $3 dollars a week and working 11 hour days Clara knew these conditions were not right. Her ability to maintain peaceful and gather women together to fight for the womens labor movement is absolutely astounding. The Book does well to depict her stuggles with abusive cops and unemployment, but her spirit never falters. In my opinion this book crosses its' 't's and dots its' "i's" in terms of  JACBA award criteria.

One of my favorite statements was "In the last scene, Clara gazes out again at the Statue of Liberty. She has proved that in America, wrongs can be righted" by Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz. At first I did not realize this, and now I have an immense amount of respect for the illustrators , Melissa Sweet, ability to add even more depth to the story.  Looking back at the pictures, I am further impressed with the detail in color scheme and incorporation of real photographs into the illustrations. A real picture of a "paystub" is placed thoughtfully throughout. Further emphasizing, the pitiful pay and its affect on the women.
