The Rwanda genocide of 1994 was a tragic and horrific event that occurred over the course of approximately 100 days in April to July 1994. The genocide was meticulously planned by extremist elements of Rwanda's majority Hutu population, who aimed to exterminate the minority Tutsi population and anyone who opposed their genocidal intentions. It is estimated that around 200,000 Hutu individuals, fueled by propaganda from various media outlets, participated in the genocide. During the campaign, more than 800,000 civilians, primarily Tutsi but also moderate Hutu, were brutally killed.

The Tutsi are an ethnic group in the African Great Lakes region, primarily found in Rwanda and Burundi. They are one of the three major ethnic groups in these countries, alongside the Hutu and the Twa. Historically, the Tutsi were pastoralists and often held the positions of the ruling elite in Rwanda. They filled the ranks of the warrior caste and exercised control over society, which was sharply stratified, with Tutsi aristocracy and Hutu commoners.

The Hutu are an ethnic group in the African Great Lakes region, primarily in Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are one of the major ethnic groups in these countries. Historically, they coexisted with the Tutsi and Twa ethnic groups. However, colonial authorities exacerbated tensions between these groups. In 1994, Rwanda experienced a genocide in which extremist Hutu killed around 800,000, mostly Tutsi people.

Historically, both the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups had lived in Rwanda for centuries. While there were social and economic differences between the two groups, ethnic identification was not always clear-cut due to intermarriage and the use of a common language. During the colonial era, the Germans and Belgians introduced a divisive ethnic classification system that exacerbated these differences.

Tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi had flared periodically over the years and explote when a plane carrying the president of Rwanda, a hutus, was shot down and they perceived this actions like an attack from the Tutsis.

During the colonial era, the Belgians favored the Tutsis over the Hutus, considering the Tutsis as a more elite and superior group. This created social and economic disparities between the two ethnic groups. After gaining independence in 1962, Rwanda experienced periods of violence and political instability, with tensions between Hutus and Tutsis persisting.

The turning point was the assassination of Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, in April 1994. This event triggered a genocide orchestrated by the extremist Hutu government. The genocide resulted in the mass killing of an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in just 100 days. The conflict was marked by brutal violence, with Hutu militias using machetes and other weapons to carry out mass killings.
