Michael Angelos should considered be a sculptor for many reasons. The sculptures that he made were some of the best that we have seen to this day. He sculpted because he wanted to take away from piece of stone and make it a piece of art rather than to add onto a canvas and make a piece of art in that way. As a young child Michelangelo preferred working on sculptures. A fact I found interesting is that when he did his work on the Sistine chapel he did not add credit to it because he was not considered a sculpture .

This was Michelangelo’s first impacting project. It was for the tomb of cardinal Bilheres de Lagraules. In this piece he sculpted two full-size figures with just a single stone. As we look at this work we can see that it portrays Mary holding Jesus’s body after he was lowered from the cross. Michelangelo made this astonishing piece at just 23 years old. One of the most noticeable visual elements of this piece is the detail of the drapery and the precision that is used to find this piece.

This piece was initially commissioned to be part of the Florence Cathedral. It ended up being placed in a public square. He is in a pose of Contrapposto he’s holding a weapon that we know was used to kill goliath. There is also a quite detailed anatomy in this figure. A challenge that Michelangelo face while making this piece was that he had to reuse the piece of marble after it had been attempted to be carved into. It took him just about two years to finish. We can see a very idealized depiction of David.

This Moses sculpture was commissioned by pope Julius the second. It was made to decorate his tomb. It was one of the 40 statues placed where it was originally designed. It depicts Moses who is a biblical figure. It consisted of Carrera marble which was easy to find. It was also very cost efficient. This statue was a centerpiece of an incredibly large project that he was assigned to. As we look at the sculpture we can see how skillful Michelangelo was and his carving. There is an intense attention to detail and his drapery. As we look at Moses’ beard we can tell that it was very hairy. Not only can we depict that Moses was strong but also that he was very idealized in this figure.

Tomb of Giuliano de’ Medici

During the time of The construction of the tomb there was political conflict. The Medici family had a rose to power. The Michelangelo had a strong relationship with this family, Michael Angelo still had a belief in the republic. As we observe this piece we can see that it is of great mass. As we visualize this we can see Michael Angelos attention to detail and skill which give the sculpture so much life. As we study the figures we can see if they’re idealized showing us how strong they possibly were. As we continue to visualize this we can see the attention to the drapery of the clothing. If there’s one thing we can take away from Michelangelo sculptures we can see he clearly had a talent for sculpting.
