Type 1 is the most severe type, it starts when the child is born. the child is born with profound hearing problems. they will have vestibular problems (which cause people to not balance properly) and most likely wont be able to sit independently before 18 months of age. Although hearing aids would be the most logical method to increase the child's hearing, it rarely helps. Introducing intervention early on will benefit the child so the parents will be able to take advantage of the child's brain when its most receptive and teach the child how to communicate.

They can communicate orally, but can also benefit from hearing aids. their vision will fade much slower than those with type 1, and wont show symptoms of RP until their teenage years.

those with type 3 usher syndrome may have slight balance problems as a child but will progress over time. however some don't experience sight or hearing difficulties until teens. Although difficulties with their sight usually don't develop until their late teens and early twenties night blindness occurs during puberty. by the time someone with type three Usher syndrome reaches their late teens to early adulthood the person will become legally blind.

individual loci are found on different chromosomes. the illness is divided into 12 sub types (USH1A-C and USH3A). Because this a disease formed by a recessive gene, there is a 1 in 4 chance that your child will have usher syndrome if the parents are carriers. unfortunately gene testing for this syndrome is hard because it could be any on 12 chromosomes.
