In Vespucci's letters, he said that he went on a voyage to find the New World. He departed in May of 1497 and returned in October of the next year. While this voyage is one of the most controversial of his voyages, it still had a big impact and got him a foothold as an explorer. It has been proposed that Vespucci fabricated it so that he would be better known as an explorer of the New World, more than Christopher Columbus at least.

The voyage was made to explore an island that was said to hold a bountiful amount of pearls. The voyage departed on May 14, 1499.
Vespucci's role is highly debated. He portrayed himself with a leadership role, but that is unlikely, he was inexperienced after all. Although, a letter from the commander said he was a pilot; another possibility is that he was there to represent the investors of the voyage. He and his backers helped pay for two of the four ships.
They stopped in the Canary Islands before splitting in half, one half, led by Commander Ojeda went north, and the half with Vespucci went south. They passed the Amazon and Para rivers before they had to turn back around because the current was too strong.
Historians are unsure if they met up with Ojeda or not. They do know that Vespucci's ships stopped in Hispaniola before heading home. They made sure to grab two-hundred-thirty-two slaves before they left.

Vespucci was hired to pilot a voyage for Manuel 1 of Portugal. Manuel wanted Vespucci to find out where a new bit of land was in relation to the Line of Tordesillas. The Line of Tordesillas was a treaty between Spain and Portugal that split the world in half, and if it was on Portugal's side of the line, it could be claimed for Portugal. The voyagers traveled along the coast of South America. At one of their stops, a band of Natives killed and ate a member of the crew. Further south, they found friendlier Natives that they traded with. Vespucci is said to have possibly been one of the first to reach Guanabara Bay, Rio de La Plata, and present-day Patagonia.

Vespucci lived out the rest of his days in Seville, Spain. He worked closely with the king, making sure pilots were properly trained and had all the correct documentation. He had a voyage planned out, but it didn't end up happening. He was paid very well for his services, 50,000 maravedis annually and 25,000 for expenses.
When Vespucci passed in 1512, he left most of his estate, including five household slaves to his wife. He gave some of his other worldly possessions to his nephew, like clothes, books, and navigational equipment.

The Naming of America

The first map using the name 'America' was made in 1507 by a man named Martin Waldseemüller. It isn't known if Vespucci was aware that the map was even made before he passed. It is unlikely because the map reached Spain after his death in 1512.
Not only was it the first map using the name 'America' to represent the New World, it also was the first map to show South America as a different thing from Asia.
Spain initially refused to use the name 'America' for the New World because they believed that the New World should be named after Columbus. Many other names circulated as a name for the New World until it stuck in 1538.
