I was very successful, in the beginning, with exercise, but fell short due to an injury. I have no doubt if I was able to continue exercising by walking and jogging, I would have lost more weight. I am still continuing to work on my core and arms though, so I am still on the right path. I think my biggest success was developing a healthy mind and heart. I was able to focus on whole food recipes and found that they are tasty and filling. I gave up candy which may be my biggest success. This is surprising to me as I love junk food and can chain eat candy and ice cream when nobody is looking!

Experience as a Learner

My initial motivation was due to the fact that I had to complete this challenge for our class. As I made my way through the challenge, I felt motivated by reading about others who struggled with weight, by seeing my family participate in activities that contributed to their healthy lifestyle and trying new exercises and foods that were accessible to me and my busy schedule. I found that online resources really helped me in my journey, as well. It was an easy way for me to find new recipes, read about other people's journey and find good music to motivate my workouts. I also found great meditation videos on Youtube. My frustration was not being able to continue jogging, as I found that really helped my stress level and helped increase my energy level.

I used my peers, family and online resources the most throughout this challenge. I was able to collaborate with them to discuss healthy dinners and lunches and discuss my failures with them, while receiving support and love. Like many others, I learn by doing and taking new risks. I created a blog, a tumblr account, used social media as inspiration and to help learn new ways to create a healthy mind, heart, and body. I learned that this is just the beginning of my journey and that I will have failures. The biggest motivation was choice. I was able to choose what was important to me and find ways that worked for me to help me learn. I am a very visual person, so any kind of multi-media is helpful to me in my journey.

Implications for Instructional Practice

The implications for learning in my classroom, and beyond, include taking a step back and really allowing my students to have choice, autonomy and find engaging, participatory ways that motivate kids. I also think it is important to teach students about having a healthy growth mind set and be open to failing. I want to find more comprehensive units that allow kids to really choose their own path in learning. This requires some work on my side, but worth it to have more motivated learners. I also will continue to teach using inquiry so that my focus is on my students and allows them to problem solve, work together and find ways to navigate through their learning. I find my students are engaged when they are working through challenging processes that allow their creative side to come out. My job really comes into play when I am there to provide guidance and support through feedback and scaffolding. When creating our fraction games, the only direction from me was that it had to include adding/subtracting, equivalent or simplifying fractions. After that, my students took over and were productive the entire time. I even had kids ask if they could work more at home. I visited groups to talk through problems that arose, but overall the kids learned from one another and took charge of their own learning.

Implications for Teaching 21st Century Literacies

The implications for teaching 21st century learners include teaching kids how to read and write, both traditionally and online. They must be able to annotate text and work through complicated text by asking questions. They must be able to edit and revise text using feedback. Digital citizenship and learning how to use Web 2.0 tools become a huge part of their learning in school. Students must be able to work together, problem solve and not be afraid to fail. They must learn how to give specific feedback to their peers. Teaching students that there is more than one way to solve problems and encouraging them to try new things will help students be successful in their learning. All of these things become important skills in their journey to becoming 21st century learners.
