SEMINAR 3 Questions for Sonita Gale by Clare Griffiths

During Week 3, seminar 3, we are very lucky indeed to be able to watch a screening of 'Hostile', a feature-length documentary focusing on the UK’s complicated relationship with its migrant communities. The film focuses on the impact of the evolving ‘hostile environment’ policies that target migrants. It is written, produced and directed by Sonita Gale, who will be available via Zoom after the screening to answer our questions! Please research the film (see all info on the KLE including a trailer) and submit your questions for Sonita here

Not so much a question but more a statement of fact: One does not need to be an immigrant to find a tory government hostile towards them. 5th or 6th richest nation on the planet and we need a campaign; "feeding Britain's children". Please wake up people and see the tories for what they are and who and what they really care about!

It seems that the most 'vulnerable'/'precarious' are those being targeted by hostile policies (e.g. refugees, people seeking asylum). The language of the government seems to be that it welcomes those who are 'skilled' and can 'contribute' to UK society, but not those who actually require some support. I wonder if you think this is a deliberate strategy?

Although the 'hostile environment' is something that was only stated in 2012, the UK have been doing their best to make it hostile for years (especially in legislation) and this continues on to this day especially following the introduction of the Nationality and Borders Act. Do you ever see this changing? That the UK will go in the opposite way and welcome people again? They seem to have been welcoming for Ukraine migrants by relaxing certain rules for them however this doesn't seem to be done for immigrants with an Asian background.
