Revised Question: Does the availability of healthcare and education have an effect on how people of different races/political views interact? Has this had an effect on social equality? (narrowed it down to two topics that would be easier to do research on)

Reflection: In this question, the main topic is to see if the distribution of goods has any effect on the way people on opposing sides of the political spectrum see the other side. Also has to do with the way races sometimes have a negative view of others based on their economic standing and the availability of resources.

Extension: I could explore this question further by looking at other countries that have universal healthcare and that provide free public education. Has this had any effects on things like hate crimes or protests? I could also pick a country that has free healthcare and a country that offers free education and compare the poverty rate between them and the United States.

Revised Question: Why do companies focus their mass marketing around celebrity endorsement? Is the consumer more likely to buy a product based on the appearance/person behind it, or by the quality of the product?

Reflection: The main topic in this question is if the image behind a product is more important than the quality. Goffman says that society is more about appearance than quality. I agree with his statement, people are more to try a product if they see someone they like either consuming or promoting it.

Extension: I could explore this question further by picking a company and looking at sales before and after they came out with celebrity endorsement. I chose this song because it speaks about social position and the social institution that is the government and military. B.Y.O.B stands for Bring Your Own Bombs. This song was released in 2005 in protest of the Iraq War.
 The very first lyric of the song says "Why do they always send the poor?" It is speaking about how the government and military send the "poor" or those that don't really have a choice to fight their battles. Some people enlist because of their love of our country, but others enlist because that is how they see a way out of their current living situation.
"Marching forward hypocritic and hypnotic computers, you depend on our protection, yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth" is referring to how we just do what we are told without really thinking about it because of something someone  in a higher social position said. Through out the music video you see soldiers wearing masks with the words truth, Die, and obey. This shows that the government only sees them as soldiers that are expected to follow orders instead of people.
The next lyrics that caught my attention are "Hangers sitting dripped in oil, Crying freedom, handed to obsoletion, Still you feed us lies from the tablecloth". This about how the war is mainly about oil, creating conflict as social interaction.

I picked this song because when Professor Tipton played it in class it really resonated with me. I come from a family of immigrants and unfortunately sometimes we feel the prejudice that comes along with it. 
The first thing where it really started to click to me was the verse by Snow Tha Product. The opening line "Its a hard line when you're an import. Baby boy it's a hard time when you aint sent for" relates to me in the way my family is. I have uncles that have been chasing the american dream and actually succeeded! But it wasn't easy at all, having to start with absolutely nothing. The line "Racists feed the belly of the beast with they pitchforks, rich chores done by the people that get ignored" is talking about how even though people have racists tendencies, they still pay illegal immigrants to do the jobs they don't want to do themselves at a minimum rate. When I was younger and struggling to find work, I was helping out my uncle at one of his job sites. It was obvious in some of the people that hired you to do the work felt like they were better than you. It seemed like they were in a higher social position than you just because you were doing work for them.

It is extremely difficult to observe something and not begin to bring in your own pre-conceived notions. The first time I truly gave in to the socialist way of thinking was when we stood outside of the library cheering people on. I really did not want to do it, it made me extremely uncomfortable which made me not really notice peoples reaction. That is until about halfway through when I let loose a little. I put away my feelings of discomfort and it allowed me to see the experiment after that. 
Asking questions and looking at life objectively is important to sociologist because how are you supposed to get accurate data if you look at everything through a small field of vision? You cant! I had to learn how to do it but once I did it affected how I conversed with everyone in my life from co-workers to my family members. When you ask a question you can't already have an answer in your head without collecting data. If you do that then you run the risk of someone giving you an answer that you don't like and not really paying attention to it. I believe that I did give it an honest try and will continue to do so in the future. In males, the smallest group are Hispanics. When it comes to pay, on average hispanics get paid less.
