I believe I deserve an A in English because I showed improvement in my writing and was determined to complete all of my assignments. I always tried my best to turn work on time despite setbacks like field trips. Before my writing was good but I could still use a lot of improvements. Learning about the importance of ethos, pathos, logos and craft moves throughout the year, improved my writing. I want my teacher to understand I always made sure to get my assignments done and learn as much as I could during class

I believe this poem does not show my real effort because I wasn't passionate about this assignment. This specific poem was a lot harder to write because it was my last one, and I was trying to dig out other pieces of my life to write about. Poetry is probably my least favorite type of writing and with the assignment of writing about myself and not about another topic challenged me. I felt a little uncomfortable writing a poem about myself, especially when it came to writing four of them. To help me on this assignment I tried to focus on using as many craft moves as possible. These four poems have prepared me to be able to write something out of my comfort zone and it was good practice for writing poems. It has also made me memorize certain craft moves since for a while that's all I seemed to do. Something that does not show my true ability was my STAR reading score. At my first attempt I scored at an 8 grade reading level, and on my second attempt I scored a 9.3. My grade on the star reading grade does not show that I also am a good writer and have a passion for reading.

One of my favorite assignments this year was working on the podcast with my book club group. Not just because of the people I was with but because we all communicated and got to share our ideas and we made sure all of our opinions on the book were validated. My Podcast shows my improvement in collaborative skills and being able to deliver an assignment to the best of my ability. During our debate I feel like I was the leader of our partnership. I made sure my partner was on top of it and contributed to the writing of our speech. One of my biggest flaws was public speaking but during my debate I didn't feel as nervous because I was pretty confident in what I was saying. As well with reading my speech out loud it prepared me for delivering the speech during class. The debate also gave me the experience of working with other people.

Growth as a Reader

I read about five books this year, four in class and one out of class. I read, ¨The Summer I Turned Pretty¨, ¨Everything, Everything¨, ¨Turtles all the way down¨, ¨All the Bright Places¨ and ¨The Hate U Give¨. I really liked the book ¨Everything, Everything¨ , and the book that is on the bottom of my list has to be ¨All the Bright Places¨. The book that had the biggest impact on me was the book I read in my book club group, ¨The Hate U Give¨. Since we had multiple assignments tied along with the book it really let me dive deep into the book. Although the book had so many pages, it was really hard to not pass the reading goal we had set each week because I just couldn´t put the book down. An interesting pattern with the books that I read this year is they all have their own movie remake or show. In the first half of the year I read less harsh topics and more ¨for fun¨ books. Once we started getting towards the middle the books got more serious and I was reading a lot quicker than I used to. The goal we set for the book club, was a pretty fast pace and during the first and second week it was a bit of a challenge. But when I was nearing the last weeks I surprised myself on how much I was reading. My book club poster shows my understanding of the book as a reader.

A piece of writing I'm proud of is my debate introduction because I devoted so much time on making sure it was as strong as possible. I had lots of good points throughout the whole thing and I felt like when I was proposing the plan it was really straightforward and precise. At the beginning of the year my argumentative writing wasn't as persuasive as it's supposed to be, but now I feel like I can take the challenge of convincing a whole class room to choose my side. Argumentation had such a big impact on all of my writing and I realized how I should use pathos more often because in order for people to listen to your ethos they need pathos first. I wish I took into account the feedback I received on our debate plan because it would have been a lot easier to defend a different plan. I realized the flaws our plan but I was prepared and willing to defend it from the opposition pointing out the flaws.

One goal I set for myself was to make sure I turned all of my work on time and I worked on it by setting reminders on my calendar to work on the assignments. If I did turn something late, it was because I was unsure on how to turn it in and not because the work was unfinished. This picture of my grades shows how I made sure all of my work was done and turned in on time, if there is not 100% on the assignment it is because of the quality of it. I usually participated quietly and talking with peers during check ins. How I responded to setbacks was telling myself lots of reassurance when I felt like I wanted to give up. When I needed help I asked my peers in case I missed any directions and then I would ask the teacher for clarity.

I want my teachers to know that I am a motivated and determined student who is willing to take on a challenge. I plan to keep continue building these skills in the future.
