This is the first film we made in media studies my role was being a cameraman/woman. Our film was about Miguel and Bartholomew finding gold on our school, Miguel and Jessica worked together because Bartholomew doubled crossed them. So Bartholomew ended up working with Betsy. They ended up finding the gold and left nothing for Miguel and Jessica.
The thing that worked for us was the camera angles, the acting from the actors, our editing by our editor. I also thing the set up of the positions/what we portrayed was perfect and everyone enjoyed their role. The things that didn't work very well for us was the audio. I believe that it was the main issue due to us not having much equipment. If we had microphone it would of been better. There was also a lot of background noise to that situation. I also thing in the editing there might of been to much sound effects.

Film Remake and Reflection

For this film we were assigned a different groups film to recreate our own way. We were tasked with rewriting the script with our own twist. We also had to make a shot list with about ten or more shots that we would put in the film we are recreating. The original film was about this girl who got cheated on by her boyfriend and goes to poison the boyfriend. The boyfriend ends up giving the poison which was a coke bottle to the girl who he cheated on with. Which the girl was the girlfriends best friend. She ended up dying because she got poisoned. We made ours be a little bit different. It had pretty similar story plot but we just embarrassed the boyfriend who cheater. We chose to include depth, long shot, high angle shot, pan left and right, two and three shot, over the shoulder shot, lots of tracking shots and wide angle shots. My job this film was being the editor which was different then last time. I also help direct and figure out shot ideas. As well as helping being the cameraman/woman.

Somethings that worked good for us was lighting. It was mostly a cloudy day so that helped us out. As well as sound was pretty good in comparison to last time. The one thing that gave us criticism was that we broke the 180 degree rule. Which is a pretty important thing to remember. So in the next film we make whoever is the cameraman/woman has to take that into account. 3 shots/movements that worked for us were the over the shoulder shot when Emma was looking at the video because it gave the viewers insight of what happened. As well as the classroom embarrassment shot because it helped the reader understand what had happened. One movement that was really good was the tracking that we did in a lot of the scenes. 3 shots/ movement that didn't work for us was the shot at the bench. Which is were the 180 degree rule was broken. Another shot was the locker scene and when they switched outfits. We did the best we could to make it look as seamless as possible. One movement that didn't work for us was the beginning scene because when I was recording that scene I by accidentally ran into which is just a very minor mistake.

GENRE AND REPRESENTATION REFLECTION

In class the genres we studied were Thriller, War, Animation, Comedy, Musical, Mystery, Horror, Superhero's, Sci-fi, Sports, Drama, Crime, and Adventure. We studied conventions, codes, and audience reactions to these various genres. We also watched 3 movie clips for different time periods that highlighted that genre. Some of the film clips we watched were hybrid films. Hybrid films are films that consistes of multiple type of genres.
In my previous group, we created two different films. The first film my group and I did was called The Golden Adventure and we determined the genre it by a hybrid genre. In this film we included adventure, drama, and a bit of action. This film was about a group of teenagers trying to find the hidden treasure that was hidden at school. The majority of our shots and camera work were two shots, the setting was wide most of the time, track in and outs to follow our actors. In terms of audience expectation the audience was expected to feel interested and entertaining while watching the film. The second film we created was a remake of a film of a different group. the genre of the film was a hybrid too, including romance and drama. it was about a cheating boyfriend that ends up dying at the end from embarrassment. most of our camera work was track in and out, close up of the reactions of our actors when they found out about the cheating, and lots of two shots. the audience expected to feel excited while watching this film, sad, embarrassed, etc. in the second film we made the error of breaking the 180 degree rule which we hope to fix in our future films.
My favorite type of genre is superhero. A pontential type of idea for a future film could be a similar remake to Supergirl. For examples A girl Kara Danvers is forced to leave her home planet and come to Earth and live a new life with no one she knew. When she was forced to hide her powers when an accident cause her to use them. Then became the superhero known as Supergirl. She faced a lot of changes during the way but she made it thru. Some conventions I would use would be an Ariel shot. I would also make it have high key and low key lighting to be able to understand the mood. As well as lots of close up to get a feel of their reaction.

Editing and Sound - Midterm Film

In November and December of 2022 we learned about editing, sound, and screenwriting/screenplay format. We studied film editing concepts and created documents featuring 20 plus kinds of editing techniques. We watched a documentary of film editing called “The Cutting Edge” and a video on the use of color. We studied sound basics and also watched a documentary on cinema sound which was called “Making Waves.” We also read the screenplay for “The Incredibles' ' which helped us learn how to format screenplays using special software, which then helped us write a two minute horror film opening about someone having a nightmare as the basis for my midterm film project.

The requirements of our midterm film were that it had to be one to two minutes long. It also had to be horror or horror hybrid. It had to be an “opening” rather than a finished film product. It had to have minimal dialogue. It was mostly music(sound effects/ambience) There was no wall-to-wall music, no long takes. It had to start with a black screen with a sort of logo and some type of credits before cutting or dissolving to the first image. There had to be at least three crosscuts between the actor and the nightmare. We had to edit it, shoot it, and upload the movie as well as complete a blog post. The film must also include one close up, one dutch angle, one high or low angle, one low key light setup or one silhouette, one pan or tilt or track/push or spin around, one zoom or dolly zoom, one subliminal cut or multi take or smash cut, one match cut, one J cut or L cut, one use of slow or fast motion, one intentional use of color for story/emotion, one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup, one instance of visual complexity in setting choice (color, texture, depth, lines, shapes, etc.), three sound effects, one piece of incidental music or one sound motif repeated three times. For extra credit we could include; quick cuts, montage, wide establishing shot, split screen, POV shot, reflection shot, intentional break of the fourth wall, intentional break of the rule of thirds, rack focus or pull focus shot, intentional use of handheld camera work, use of color filters to create a dream like quality, fisheye lens or fisheye effect, company logo with high quality graphic.

I adhered to the conventions/codes/audience/expectation and engagement by keeping people on their toes. As well as it being a continuous story. I also made sure to follow the requirements.I broke horror conventions by some harsh cuts. I didn't know what to put there because nothing looked correct. I represented the cameraman, sound-man, and editor. I was every role minus the actor.

Some things that were successful in my piece were the camera quality. For it being on an iphone it came out very good. Some other things that came out good were the editing. It really helped to pull together the movie. Some things that were not successful in my piece were my sound. I expected that because we didn’t have good sound equipment. Which made it really difficult to fix it in the editing process to try and fix it. For the script I used the software called Arc Studios While shooting I used the camera app in my phone to create my movie. While editing I used the software on my computer called IMovie. Some sound/music websites I used were ones that were already on the IMovie software. For graphics I used this program called Canva. It helped me create my logo for my intro. Some learning curves were to add the correct music and sound to make the audience suspenseful.

TWO MINUTE FILM OPENING ANALYSIS

Passenger

1. A one or two sentence description of the first two minutes. What happens?

In the first two minutes it's about an introduction. It shows the setting as a B-roll clip.

2. What is the genre and who is the target audience for this film?

This movies genre is romantic mystery, the targeted audience I would say is 15-35 women and men. I would say men as well because its space and mysterious.

3. Describe the opening credits and title sequences, including any company logos or idents. When do they appear? What color/font are they using? How does it "align" with the opening of the film? Anything else you notice?

The opening credits of this film were at the beginning. Theyn had a Sony logo, Columbia logo, and then it transitioned into the movie. It was dark and spacelike. But it still had the credits overlapping the movie scene.

3. Describe it visually -- a shot by shot breakdown that includes type of shot/movement, if any.

A lot is the shots are B-roll shots. It looks like they used a dolly because it was very smooth

4. Describe the sound -- another "sound by sound" for the entire two minutes.

The music for the entire 2-minute clip was background music. It was spooky and had space themes. It was meant to get you into the feeling of where they are.

5. Describe how you felt at the end of the two minutes. Did you want to know more? What was left hanging, if anything? What questions do you still have?

Yes, I felt like I couldn’t get a feel of what the movie was. The clip ended with it looking like they were going to crash into some thing or type of planet.

6. How would you describe the editing style in this clip? Any editing techniques you noticed, or length of shots?

I would describe it very mysterious because they're just trying to get you in the mood for this mysterious romantic film. It looked like the 2-minute clip could have been a long take because it was so seamless.

7. How did these first two minutes adhere to conventions?

It didn’t really adhere to any conventions because it was just setting the scene. The only thing I could say was that it was mysterious.

8. How did these first two minutes break with conventions?

Its broke conventions because it didn’t really have anything to do with romance. It was more mysterious within the first two minutes.

9. How did these first two minutes represent social groups or people or issues?

The first to minutes brought up a question, since I read the description of the movie I had an idea of what it was about. But how did they wake up I wish I could of left those two minutes with something to look forward to.

10. Why do you think this film was distributed on this site?

This movie is distributed through Hulu. This is more of a Hulu film because Hulu is geared towards more adult romantic films. I'm also surprised to see that Netflix doesn’t have this when they focus on this too.

11. EXTRA CREDIT: Any other thoughts or comments or realizations you had about film openings after viewing this clip?

I realized that the first two minutes are kind of very important because if they don’t grab your watchers then its useless.

Some type of editing styles that will be included in our movie are, fast cuts. It helps the water see intensity if there is any. I feel like fast and slow mode shots will be able for the water to get the feeling of whats going on. Montages will be able to help us get a feel of whats going on around the scene. I feel like Im going to ignore more freeze frame shots. As well as filters. Probably the only one I'll use if i use any will be black and white. We haven't really came up with an idea of what our logo will look like but the software we are going to use to create it is called Canva. In terms of fonts, definitely cursive. It gives off a lot of a romantic feel. For my credits I'm planning to overlay them within a montage scene of the actors names.
Some transitions we will probably use within our movie is fades, dissolves and swipes. I feel like nothing to fancy is better for romantic movies. I feel like less is more in our case scenario. My sound consideration is using the sound equipment that Ms. Marquis has for us to use. I feel like It's gonna be the best option for us. One sound effect were going to have to make or insert while editing is the sound of a tree branch breaking. As well as a door opening very quietly. I feel like my the music we would have would be more towards sad songs that have a special meaning. I haven't found out in what way I can use copy-write music but if theres nothing possible im going to have to use non copy-write.

Independent Distribution and Marketing Plan "Lover From the Past"

If I were to distribute my film independently I would publish it to YouTube. I think youtube would be one of the easiest platforms to be able to get eyes on it. I think it would be cool to see my movie in the theaters but for it to be able to get to that stage we would need a film distributor. They would be a good fit for our film if we were to get one because they would help get movies out there. I think Venice, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance would all be great film festivals because none of them really have a category of film that goes to it.

Our movie's title is Lover from the past. I think this title does work for our film because it's about a dead boyfriend who came back. I feel this is a good title for our film because it seems to fit our movie.

If love is real, It will come back. The meaning of this is that love is real and if you really believe in it, it will come back to you.

The target audience for our movie is teen girls around the age of 15-22. The income of this audience would be very low since most of them are still in school and maybe working. Some of their interests that they would have is romance. They probably care about romantic things and guys.

Using our notes from the question above I think we could reach our audience through ads on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Youtube. These are the best places for our audience. This would be one of the things we would be able to self distribute because we are able to make our own content for those ads.

I feel like a fun way we could engage our target audience members is by making a game/quiz. It would be which character quiz are you, which many people enjoy. We would try to make our ads as interesting as possible to get as many clicks as possible. I feel another way we could get them to share our ads is by doing giveaways. That usually would get more people interested in our movie and ads.

I think the way we would design our movie poster is by using a loving picture of the three characters and adding the title as well as the tag line. I feel like the way that it would be similar to the romance genre is always having the background of a picture of the romantic couples. The main colors we will use are probably red, black, and white. The background is going to be a picture of our 3 main characters with the girl being in the middle. Some iconography that we will probably use is like red and blue police sirens of police. I feel like when we have to make the poster more thoughts will come to mind. The fonts that we are gonna use are mostly cursive. I feel like cursive is very romantic.

During our production process of our films we learned a lot of things. The first time we filled it took us a very long time because there were many things we didn't know. When we got that footage back we realized how bad it really was. This is because we had no microphone. When we sat down with Ms. Marquis to discuss our rough cuts and she gave us a lot of useful information for us to be able to fix our film. Which then forced us to refilm. There were so many little mistakes and our actors were not able to be in it so we decided it was best to refilm the whole thing. A lot of there were sound issues, and too much extra footage and missing parts. Our new film we believe it's much better than the first one and hope Ms. Marquis agrees with it.
