The setting; time, place, social conditions, atmosphere (what is the mood, tone, how do the characters demonstrate Fitzgerald's point of view)

Fitzgerald’s point of view was that in the 1920’s there was a decline of moral values and an emphasis on money and wealth. He viewed this new cultural idea to be superficial and a sign of trouble to come. Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy demonstrate this well because they are all rich and their attitude towards money over morals is exerted throughout the story. The need for wealth and a lack of moral values portrayed by the characters pushes Fitzgerald’s message of how money is superficial and how there should be an emphasis put back on moral values. The mood of the suspicious because Gatsby is mysterious and his intentions are blurred. The reader feels that Gatsby is more complex that he is letting on and becomes suspicious of his behavior. The tone is anxious throughout the chapter because Gatsby was so nervous about meeting Daisy. Nick offered a stark contrast to this by being calm and reserved throughout the chapter.

Diction and Syntax: Include details and phrases that add different layers of meaning

Many of Fitzgerald’s sentences are long, complex, and elaborate, giving many details in a single sentence. Most of the dialoge is short and to the point. “Luckily the clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers, and set it back in place. Then he sat down, rigidly, his elbow on the arm of the sofa and his chin in his hand (Fitzgerald 88.)” This quote symbolizes Gatsby’s attempt to “turn back time” and how it failed. Fitzgerald relies on verbs and adjectives to describe the movements of the characters throughout the chapters and demonstrates the grandness of Gatsby’s house. He also uses simple, well-known words throughout the chapter, which is a change from previous chapters where he uses more descriptive, less well-known words to describe the settings and the characters.

“They’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such — such beautiful shirts before (Fitzgerald 94.) This quote is important because Daisy married Tom because he was wealthy and left behind a relationship that could of been. Now, she is tied to Tom, even if she realizes that Gatsby could have provided riches and love. “They had forgotten me, but Daisy glanced up and held out her hand; Gatsby didn’t know me now at all. I looked once more at them and they looked back at me, remotely, possessed by intense life. Then I went out of the room and down the marble steps into the rain, leaving them there together (Fitzgerald 98.) This quote represents the dynamics of the relationship between the three characters. Gatsby and Daisy somewhat use Nick for gains and then leave him behind. It also shows part of the facade that Gatsby puts up to Nick because he only shows interest in Nick because he can use him to get to Daisy.

Include a personal response to what you have read. Why is this chapter important to Fitzgerald's development of THEME, SETTING, or PURPOSE?

I think that this chapter is important to developing the theme. The theme is how money and wealth are superficial. In this chapter, Daisy meets Gatsby for the first time in 5 years, only to realize she rejected him 5 years ago. Daisy wanted to marry Tom because he was wealthy, but after she married him, she realized that she regretted the decision. Gatsby comes along, now extremely wealthy, and Daisy comes to the realization that she made the wrong decision in marrying Tom because now she is missing the romantic relationship that she and Gatsby could have had. This plays back to the theme superficial wealth because even though Tom was wealthy, it didn’t fill the void of the romantic relationship that she was missing. If she had agreed to marry Gatsby, she would have acquired wealth and a fulfilling romantic relationship.
