gender role : the role or behaviour learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms.

Social Learning Theory: suggests gender roles are learnt from childhood; from influences such as parents, media and schools.

It is generally and stereotypically learnt in the ballroom dance world that the male leads and females follows. This can be seen as a reflection of general socially learnt behaviour.
This is why I went with the assumption that the attendance ratio between male and female would be more equal as the partner work dictates a lead/follow style choreography.

"I think the ratio of men to women is good here. It gives you a chance to dance with loads of different partners without it being awkward which is fun." (female, early 30s)

"We came for my friends birthday; we like dancing so it was just a bit of fun and something different." (female, early 20s)

"It's a great night out to just come and dance, I love salsa dancing!"
