Theoretical Issues:

I attended the evening with the theory that the salsa dance would provide a more gender equal attendance due to the nature of the gender rolled partner work; the stereotypical male/female pairing.

gender role : the role or behaviour learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms.

Social Learning Theory: suggests gender roles are learnt from childhood; from influences such as parents, media and schools.

It is generally and stereotypically learnt in the ballroom dance world that the male leads and females follows. This can be seen as a reflection of general socially learnt behaviour.
This is why I went with the assumption that the attendance ratio between male and female would be more equal as the partner work dictates a lead/follow style choreography.

I used an informal interviewing method to collect qualitative data, and this is what people said:

"I think the ratio of men to women is good here. It gives you a chance to dance with loads of different partners without it being awkward which is fun." (female, early 30s)

"We came for my friends birthday; we like dancing so it was just a bit of fun and something different." (female, early 20s)

"It's a great night out to just come and dance, I love salsa dancing!" (male, mid 30s)

There was a relatively equal gender attendance, however slightly more female than male (it was difficult to calculate and gain exact numbers in this informal environment).
This doesn't disprove my theory; it depended on people's motive for being there, the men I spoke to seemed to be there to salsa dance in particular whereas some of the women were there as a social activity- the salsa bar just provided a fun alternative night out.
