Hi! My name is Inessa. I’m from Saint Petersburg and I’m a student of Herzen University.
Today I’d like to tell you about one of my favourite parks. It is called the Catherine park because it is located next to the famous Catherine Palace. I live just in 10 minute drive away from that park and quite often come there at weekends. Sometimes I go there with my parents by car and sometimes I ride my bicycle there.

I read it in one of the guide books that such famous architects as Kvasov, Chevakinsky, Rastrelli and the master gardener Roosen were responsible for the layout of this park. As far as I know, this kind of park is called the regular park. It is called the regular park as everything in this park is simmetrical, there is the certain geometry in the layout of this park. It is also divided into the certain areas that are called terraces.

Just in front of the beautiful blue and white Catherine Palace there are two ponds that are called Mirror Ponds as they look like the reflection of one another in the mirror. I know that during the times of the Russian tsars the beautiful white swans used to swim in these ponds. Today we can only see ducks.

If you stand face in the Palace, on your left hand side you can see the famous Cameron gallery. It is built of white marble. At her older age Catherine the Second has difficulties using the stay cases and the Scottish architect Cameron had constructed the special gallery for her. It was built just next to the Palace and she could walk along the Palace right into the open gallery, have some fresh air without living the Palace.

I must tell you that all the beautiful trees in this garden have very beautiful shapes. They all carefully clipt. There are a lot of significant cozy corners in this park. And the people who live in Saint Petersburg as well as the foreign tourists love coming here for having some fresh air and enjoying the beautiful views.

One of the most interesting features about the Catherine park is that there is a regular park in it and the landscape park. The landscape park is very different from the regular park: there are no simmetrical paths, the trees are not trimmed and the gardeners make sure that everything in the landscape park looks just the way the nature had created it.

In the centre of the landscape park of the Catherine palace there is a beautiful pond called the Big Pond, or the Large Pond. In the center of the Large Pond there is an island with an orchestra Pavilion on it. The orchestra would usually play there when the guests are going boating in the Pond. Can you amagine how wonderful it must have been!

My favourite place in this park is a very special fountain. I read that it was created by the Russian sculptor Sokolov. The name of this fountain is the Maiden with a Pitcher. It shows a beautiful young girl sitting on the rock and next to her there is a broken pitcher and the water is coming out of it. The girl looks very sad. I think, she is crying because probably she was carying this pitcher of water back home and now it’s broken and she is very sad. Whenever I pass by this fountain I always feel like stopping by looking at this girl and telling to her: “Please, don’t cry! It will be ok!”

One of the most tragic thing that I can tell you about this park is that during the times of the Second World War it was occupied by the nazis. I know that the Palace was almost completely destroyed by the enemy and the area of the park was mind. After the Second World War the Palace was restored. The park was demand and now once again we can enjoy it. Hopefully, one day you can come to Saint Petersburg and we can take a walk together in this beautiful park!
