The most used energy source in order is coal-petroleum- natural gas- renewable energy. By the early 1900s, coal-fired power units featured outputs in the 1 MW to 10 MW range, outfitted with a steam generator, an economizer, evaporator, and a superheater section. By the 1910s, the coal-fired power plant cycle was improved even more by the introduction of turbines with steam extractions for feedwater heating and steam generators equipped with air preheaters—all which boosted net efficiency to about 15%. The 40-MW Lakeside Power Plant in St. Francis, Wisconsin, began operations in 1921 by WEC Energy company.

In 1949, General Electric installed the first gas turbine built in the U.S. for the purpose of generating power at the Belle Isle Station, a 3.5-MW unit, owned by Oklahoma Gas & Electric.

Renewable energy source

solar cell- The next breakthrough in PV technology came in 1940, with Russell Shoemaker Ohl, a semiconductor researcher at Bell Labs. The first practical solar cell was developed a few years later in 1954 by Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson, researchers at Bell Labs.

wind energy- wind is the oldest form of renewable energy, started in Greek. In 1888, Charles Brush, an inventor in Ohio, constructed a 60-foot wind turbine capable of generating electricity in his backyard.

Interest in wind power was renewed by the oil crisis of the 1970s, which spurred research and development.

By the 1980s, the first utility-scale wind farms began popping up in California. Europe has been the leader in offshore wind, with the first offshore wind farm installed in 1991 in Denmark.

The business model began to shift in 1970s by oil shock, and environmental problems. However, in 1940s, because of abundant energy source, renewable energy was limited.

Nuclear fission is, in a way a long term sustainable solution that is also safe and environmentally friendly. The notion of radioactivity being dangerous is mostly because of Fukushima/Chernobyl, but statistics show that 3rd generation nuclear reactors cause the smallest deaths of all energy sources per energy generated.

Regulation of nuclear power dates back to the 40s and 50s. Politically motivated by the cold war, nuclear development was not only a concern of energy but also of national defense.

To this day, the sentiment remains the same. 80 years of development in nuclear engineering allowed us to create technologies such as breeder reactors and 3rd/4th generation reactors mentioned above, not to mention molten salt reactors that have been operational since last August.

https://publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/handle/JRC125953

https://www.nrc.gov/docs/ML1029/ML102980443.pdf

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4EJQPWjFj8
