The question that the daughter asked moved her mother because they were talking about Picasso's "blue period".When the narrator says 'i can see a story developing behind her eyes' she means that the mother is thinking of ways to answer her question, but in the process, the mother is caught thinking about her own life and how she had to leave her tribe, relating to the "blue period" of Picasso's depression. In my opinion, dealing with depression is hard, especially when you have to look back and see what started it all.

When the narrator says"I can see a story developing behind her eyes" i think she means she knows when her mom has a story to tell. In lines 52-54 the text states"My mother takes my hand and looks away
from the painting. I can see a story developing behind her eyes, and I
tug on her arm to release the words. She will tell me why Picasso was
blue, what his thoughts were as he painted this canvas." Therefore because of this I can infer that when her mom was telling the her the story about Picasso she started thinking about her old life and how she missed her old life.

When the narrator says "I can see a story developing behind her eyes" she is talking about how her mother is thinking of a story about Picasso and is about to tell her about his "blue period". I know this because she says " I
tug on her arm to release the words. She will tell me why Picasso was blue, what his thoughts were as he painted this canvas. She relates anecdotes I will never find in books,". From this I can tell that her mother tells many story that might not be entirely true but the narrator believes every word her mom shares with her. I also can find out from the text that the mom has a small opinion on Picasso and his blue time because she says "My mother takes my hand and looks away from the painting.". Therefore I can realize that she might have also had a "blue period". In my opinion I think every one goes through a blue time. Just some people go through it longer or deal with it in a different way.

What she means when she says, "I can see a story developing behind her eyes", is that she knows her mom is thinking about a story. In lines 58-59 the text states, "I don't even bother to check these references because I like my mother's version best." This explains that the mothers stories are only 'based' on a true story. The stories are more sugar coded and child safe, because they explain the story in a way that is still the same idea. In my opinion this tells me that when a child likes something, they can recognize it easily. For example if a child likes ice cream, when they hear an ice cream truck, they think of ice cream. The narrator loves her moms stories, and so when she sees the look in her eyes, she knows there is a story coming.

On line 54 the narrator means when he says, "I can see a story developing behind her eyes" it means that she is going to tell her daughter a story about Picasso, in a way that she can understand. In lines 51-52 the text states, "I squint at the blue man holding a blue guitar. Was he very sad? I ask." This is showing that Picasso is sad because when you say someone is blue it is a metaphor meaning that they are very sad. Also in lines 54-55 the text also starts, "I can see a story developing behind her eyes, and I tug on her arm to release the words." This shows that her mother is trying to think of a story to tell her, to make it appropriate for her daughter but then her daughter tugs on her arm to tell her mother to tell her the story. I can infer that since her mother has to think about a story to tell her daughter that she is thinking of an appropriate story to tell her, and make a story that her daughter would enjoy. I can also say that since she is going back and thinking, it means that she might be having a flash back or is thinking about her own self when she left Dakota.

What narrator means whens she says, "I can see a story developing behind her eyes" is that her mother could imagine the story and picture every moment of how her mom was going through what Picasso was going through; the sad period. Also, how her mother is telling the story in a different way. On line 55-58 the texts states,"She will tell me why Picasso was blue, what his thoughts were as he painted this canvas. She relates anecdotes I will never find in books, never see footnoted in a biography of the master artist." From the text i can infer that the narrator's mother is also going through a blue period. She feels away from home and not like her-self anymore. "She relates anecdotes, that i will never in books" What this means is her mother relates things the happened to Picasso to her on life, but her mom cant tell the true story. She has to improvise the story so her the narrator will understand why people get sad. In my opinion, I believe that the narrator 's mother did the right thing about how to tell the narrator a life lesson on sadness.

what she means when she says i can see a story developing behind her eyes is, that she knows her mom can relate to the blue times so she is relating in a story of her life as it happened like her cutting off her braid because she had to leave her family and move to Chicago. on line 24 -25 of the text it states "She left Standing Rock to take a job in Chicago so she could help out the family during the war." because of this i can infer she didn't want to leave and that's why she can relate to Picasso. In my opinion the story is a good story of how it is hard to be a Indian, and how a change that major can change a persons life a lot it can be hard for people make that kind of change

She then asks her mother what she's thinking as the text states here on line 55", I
tug on her arm to release the words." By this I can tell that the narrator is curious and probably asks a lot of question. I can now reason that the mom has a flashback to her life in the Dakotas.
I believe that when the author says " I can see a story developing behind her eyes" that the author meant that the mother can relate a blue period. The mother had to leave her homeland and had to cut to her hair. In lines 56 through 59 the author says." She relates anecdotes I will never find in books, never see footnoted in a biography of the master artist. I don’t even bother to check these references because I like my mother’s version best." The mother can tell the daughter stories and references that the daughter would or could never think about. The mother shares a side to the story that know one would ever think about. the mother had to go through a lot and so did. The author also says," She will tell me why Picasso was blue, what his thoughts were as he painted this canvas." I think that the daughter knows this was going to happen and that the mother was going to think about Picasso.
