About Revision Process

Revision process, especially in the “speed dating” workshop, is an efficient tool for me to learned from all kinds of suggestions to realize my shortcomings. Because I used to find my good friends, usually no more than two, to help me modify my article. This approach is time consuming and over time you may find that your thinking doesn't expand. However, this workshop opened the door to a new world for me. We read excerpts from each other's articles for a short period of time and then wrote down our observations and suggestions; Then exchange articles with different people. Finally, summarize the other side's suggestions, and then choose the one you are ready to accept. I really find it help since about seven or eight students can put forward their suggestions for my paper in just one hour. Moreover, suggestions from various aspects enable me to improve my article more effectively. For instances, I got feedback referring to multiple aspects, “Clear structure, easy to read.” And “Introduction paragraph is enough for readers to get information.”, hence, I can spend less time in structure and introduction which can save me a bunch of time. And some other advices that I addressed, “Need a better citation format”; “Signal phrases should be more diversified”; “The word “which” appears too many times, kind of repeated.”, reminds me of some small problems that I often ignore. I can improve on the questions raised by others, such as looking for the correct usage of MLA citation, finding the repeated signal words and replacing them with different ones. For example, I replaced signal phrase “As…said” since it appeared many times for different phrase, like “According to” and “documented”.

From a procrastinator to an efficient planner

Through ENG107’s projects, my writing habits have been effectively improved, which displayed in my changes from procrastinator to an efficient planner. Because in all major projects, I done the work step by step. For instances, in project 1, in order to complete an overall genre analysis, I did the corpus which is a collection of all material that I will need later. Then I filled a observations chart from various perspectives like design, organizations, content and styles to for later comparisons. At last, I kept award for deeper inferences. Project 2 can be a good example either. I did my work following the specific steps: idea proposal, secondary research, primary research, rough draft and final draft. The focus is the primary research, since I've never done a research. I didn't have a clue at the beginning. I even felt like I was a procrastinator and had to finish this assignment that I couldn't handle on the last day. However, I tried to follow the steps and strategies uploaded by instructor. A complex mission was simplified into several chunks, “identify what&where&when”, “schedule and prepare”, “conduct the observation”, “review notes and synthesize what observed”, “reflect & analyze” and “write a report”. This form effectively alleviates my procrastination, I did several pieces each day, and handed in the high-quality homework within the specified time. Besides, Project 3 also follows this tone, began at “Brainstorm”, then combined ideas to “Idea proposal”, stretched “outline”, then a final paper was produced. I really enjoyed these separated writing process, it not only alleviates my procrastination, but also enables me to complete each task with higher quality.

Doing Close Reading With Annotations

I learned how to do close reading with annotations through major projects, which helped me a lot for my future study. From Student’s Guide, I learned three phases for annotation, “Pre-reading”, “Active reading”, and “Directed reading.” I find that doing annotations can not only help me better understand material, also strengthen my memory in specific way like underline highlighting or colorful notes. Take Ben’s Bells as an example, I might only browse it as before, but now I will scan the text and ask general questions first, like what is it conventions, unique design, author, etc, which really help me to anticipate further with the text. For Ben’s bell, I determined its convention as community profile because of its title and additional pictures. Then I wrote down my questions in red color, highlighting in orange shows my observations, and highlight sentences in blue colors which are answers for my pre-reading questions. Similarly, when reading Tapahonso’s “A Sense of myself”, I determined its genre as an autobiography about languages after pre-reading, then I made my own inferences in blue. Since doing inferences which adds a thoughtful process, which makes my memory of the article more longer. Besides, it benefited my further study, for example, when comparing different literacy narratives, annotations saved me a bunch of time. Because colorful notes effectively reminds me and give me clues.
