WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BELIEFS HELD BY THE ELITE AND COMMON PEOPLE AND WHAT ACCOUNTS FOR THE DIFFERENCES?

The main difference between the elite and common people was regarding the type of accusation of witchcraft they were accused of. The common people tended to accuse wise women, who's acts stemmed from Paganistic practices which was gathering powers from the Earth to help in their practises. Wise women were main figures in their villages and were highly valued in society, though soon this all changed, these women removed impurities, they took off sorcery, they dealt with infertility and even had cures for impotency. Whereas the elites made accusations based on diabolism which was worshipping the devil. However, the way the elite viewed witches had been casted down to the common people through the arts and printing of books ('Malleus Maleficarum'), soon even the common people believed that witches had links to the devil.

Scepticism about witchcraft was just as old as the belief in witchcraft itself.

There were five main sources of the sceptical tradition.

The first was classical texts, such as The Golden Ass of Apuleius, and the odes of the Roman poet Horace. These works helped to create a stereotype of the witch, but at the same time they never treated the witch as a real threat.

Secondly, there was the Canon Episcopi itself, which certainly raised doubts about the reality of nocturnal flight.

A third source was the writings of Renaissance humanists, who were openly contemptuous of the scholastic mentality
that gave support to many witch beliefs. Renaissance humanists also revived many of the classical philosophical texts that denied the possibility of human beings attaining any certain knowledge at all.

Another source of scepticism was a theological tradition that became especially strong among Protestant clergymen which insisted that God Himself, rather than a witch operating with demonic assistance, was the source of all misfortune.

Finally, in the seventeenth century, a number of philosophers claimed that nature operated like a machine in accordance with immutable laws of nature, thereby excluding any supernatural intervention in the natural world.

" Most theologians, jurists and local magistrates subscribed to the conventional belief in the reality and the danger of the crime. As long as the educated elite believed that the Devil could exercise power in the world, the arguments of the sceptics could be answered. Only in the late seventeenth century did a new breed of sceptic, reflecting new philosophical currents that found no place for the Devil in the natural world, begin to win the day."
