I loved the book, The Sweet Smells of Christmas, as a child, because I have always loved Christmas and I thought that it was amazing that I could scratch the pictures and smell the things in the story. My mom always read to us at bedtime every night and took us to the library often to select new books. My mom loved to read and always had a book in her hand. I had a great example of the love of reading at a young age!

I loved reading books that were in a series. My favorites were Sweet Valley Twins and R.L. Stine's Fear Street. I loved reading in my spare time and especially enjoyed when books had recurring characters. During this time, I also got selected to be a library assistant at our school library. I loved shelving the books and learning about all of the new books our library had to offer.

I continued to enjoy books that were part of a series. I liked to read books about characters that were going through some of the same life experiences as me, because I was able to relate to the characters. My favorite series was Sweet Valley High. I remember bringing books along on family vacations to read in the car and reading at night before I went to bed. My favorite place to read was in my dad's big blue lazboy reclining rocking chair with a comfy blanket. During my junior high years, I was also involved in a book club at school where we read and discussed books together. This was part of my creative writing elective, which I loved! Whenever I was a teenager, I always dreamed about writing the next great American novel.

During these years, I enjoyed reading mystery books and also started reading some romance books. One of my favorite authors was Mary Higgins Clark, because I loved trying to figure out who committed the crime. My mom would take me to the bookstore almost every weekend and buy me a new book. It was always fun whenever my mom and I would read the same book and then discuss it together. I also enjoyed reading some of the classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and Jane Eyre, which were favorites of my grandma. I will always treasure reading these novels and discussing them with my grandma. It was a special bond she and I shared.

I enjoy reading two genres - romance and suspense. However, my preference is for books I read to have a happy ending for the characters. I am not drawn to a sad book. I still enjoy reading books with recurring characters, because I enjoy seeing how the characters evolve and grow. One of my favorite series of books is Jill Shalvis' Lucky Harbor series. I also really enjoy books that are set during the holiday season, because I love Christmas. I actually read these books year round.

I taught 1st grade and kindergarten before staying home with my girls. I always read several books to my class throughout the school day and would put these books in my classroom library, so my students could enjoy them. As a student, I loved whenever my teachers would read aloud to the class and I made it my goal to always read at least 2 books a day to my class. As a class, we would discuss the books and do different types of reading responses like writing or creating artifacts.

Librarians had a big influence in developing my love of reading. I can still remember my elementary school librarian reading stories and making them come alive with puppets and flannel board characters. Whenever I become a librarian, I hope to share my love of reading with my patrons through read-alouds, books clubs, and other library programs. I would like my patrons to be able to create booktrailers and book reviews using tools like YouTube.
