My name is Anthony Losapio and my topic is how hip-hop has influenced social issues. I chose this topic because I enjoy listening to hip-hop music and I am concerned about the current issues that face my friends. These issues include racism, discrimination and injustice. Hip-hop brings awareness of these issues and can be the starting point of the tough conversations these topics demand. I am very interested to understand just how much of an impact hip-hop has had in light of the recent social and pollical issues we are facing.

My research spanned the both the English and History disciplines. Connecting these disciplines came very naturally. The lyrics of the songs touch upon language and the power of words. Rappers use their hip-hop lyrics to convey their experiences and we have seen this language brought into the vocabulary of the audience. As hip-hop becomes more prominent, new words and language styles emerge. The stories and concepts of the lyrics are directly related to history, both past and present. When rappers share their experiences, they include their views on historical events, how those events shape our world today, and what is happening as a result. At its core, hip-hop is a rally cry to understand history and to affect positive change.

In my independent research, I have found it to be difficult and overwhelming at times. Not only am I collecting relevant information on my topic, but I am also trying to determine the best questions to ask. I found that it is easy to go off on tangents and lose focus. However, I have learned a significant amount about hip-hop’s contributions and the history of the how it has emerged as a powerful voice for those affected by the current social issues. I would like to do a presentation to demonstrate what I have learned and to inform my classmates of the positive impact hip-hop is making.

Putting together the presentation is a concern to me, since I want to make sure it is organized and easy to understand. But even though I am nervous, I am excited to share my knowledge with the class and to raise awareness of why hip-hop is so important in today’s environment.

Using a bloom’s statement helps to organize and keep me focused on the project’s overall goal. Having a clear goal in sight helps with time management and allows me to break down the goal into smaller tasks while still maintaining focus. I like using the vision planning board because it also is an organizational tool. Drawing on the planning board allows for creativity and helps to outline the steps necessary to achieve the goal.

Feedback is a very useful tool during my projects. I like hearing what my peers have to say and how they have interpreted my project. Getting these different perspectives makes me see things in ways I hadn’t thought of previously. The more eyes on the project, and receiving the feedback, let’s me know the strengths of my project and the weaknesses. For example, when selecting the attributes of my end user, the feedback I received was to be more descriptive. This led me to think more about the end user and give a richer description. I also received feedback on my discipline connections, letting me know that I needed to explain more fully how they are connected.

Using the feedback I received, I modified the description of my end user to have more attributes, such as being American, a Hip-Hop fan, a teenanger, and socially aware. I also modified my discipline connections by adding how they are connected, such as the English connection being analysis of song lyrics and the History connection being how Hip-Hop has influenced policing both in the past and currently.

When giving feedback to my peers, I chose to write down clarifying questions for them so that they would be able to see where more explanation is needed. I believe this helped them, since sometimes you may understand your subject material very well and it is hard to step away and realize that others don’t have the same understanding. Making things clear will help keep the audience engaged. For example, I asked Emi for more information and explanation on what the riots were and to name the important figures in this event. I think it is our responsibility to provide feedback to our peers so we can all improve our analytical and presentation skills. We just need to ensure that our feedback is beneficial and that it is actionable.

Throughout this project I feel I was mostly independent but did require help at certain parts of the project including the initial research stage with finding sources on my topic. This is because my topic is fairly new and not a commonly covered topic by databases and researchers, this caused most of my sources to be songs in which I analyzed for further information and clarification on the project. The stage that I was the most independent for was the test and evaluation stage because I had all the resources and information I needed to put my project together, so I just focused on completing the project and did not need as much help. This project has made me more independent through managing my time and balancing out each aspect of the project so that they all had enough time to complete. The start of the project I had managed my time bad by spending too much time trying to find detailed sources which held me back in the project however throughout the rest of the project I started managing my time better by setting clear goals for what I wanted to complete within a certain amount of time.
My most significant success during this project was incorporating all of my analysis for both discipline connections along with having videos of the songs played in my project. This is my greatest accomplishment because of the amount of work it was, adding all of the background knowledge for the topic and also having an in-depth understanding of the lyrics of popular protest songs. I think my most significant failure in this project was spending too much time writing and revising my script instead of putting the video together and recording. This is because when I got around to editing the video I was running out of time so I could not spend as much time editing the final product as I would have liked.
The stage that had the most impact on my project was definitely the model & Prototype/ Test & Evaluation stages because I could look at my script and visualize how to add pictures and videos in certain parts to enhance the audience's learning experience. Another reason is because once I had recorded and completed a section of the video, I kept on going back and revising the script and video to make sure that it explained the information as concisely and detailed as possible.
The information I want people to walk away with from my project is how important hip-hop is to society, especially as a form of activism. As explained and shown in the video Hip-hop is an effective way for people to voice their thoughts and experiences to a large audience and is able to connect communities through this.

Looking back at the project I really enjoyed being able to choose a topic that interests me and make a whole project around it with having help from teachers and classmates along the way. This has allowed me to connect school with my life more and how I can use habits and processes I have learned in school to analyze and learn more about topics that are important to me.
