✧･ﾟAn Art Exhibit: Wide Open･ﾟ✧

Within these four walls of a place I called home, I chose to stay in one corner and let myself sense everything that is right before me. It was a surreal but rewarding experience because I came to an understanding of what it means to hope at that very moment. I was reminded unexpectedly of certain events in my life that are continually happening inside our home, it is usually unnoticed – yet there is an idea of hope with it. A word got into mind which eventually led to the title of this art exhibition called “Wide Open.” This exhibit is composed of the following artwork: Awakening, Another World, and Not Alone.

🕊 Awakening

Awakening is an artwork that comes with the thought of the first thing that every person in this world does in the morning – which is to wake up. In my perspective, waking up is always a chance to hope and experience it. From this one corner of our home, I started to stand up and gathered sounds that I typically hear in the morning, took a photo of our ceiling, and downloaded a video from YouTube that would best demonstrate my point of view in opening my eyes. Included in this art are the sounds produced by switching on the light, the alarm clock, and the electric fan. Also, I recorded my mother’s voice with her line every morning. Through hearing the click of the light switch, it just means that I am alive and a new day is ready for me. On the other hand, the alarm clock is a reminder that I still have time to face this life. Then, the electric fan tells me to breathe and stay cool in whatever situation that may arise throughout the day. Most importantly, my mother’s voice gives me peace knowing that for as long as I have her around, I will never be alone. As I decide to wake up, the light from my room welcomes me after such a long sleep. This light shines through me and I aim to let others encounter it too. I feel grateful to hope in this kind of setting because not all people were given this chance to live another life, especially during the height of the pandemic.

🕊 Another World

Now, let us dig deeper into the meaning behind the second artwork – Another World. The inspiration here is a door that we keep on entering in the vicinity of our home. In this particular art, to hope is having the opportunities knocking on your door and choose to explore the place ahead of it. After doing the first artwork, I proceeded in taking a video of my hand opening a door and the view behind our home separately. Again, I searched for both sound and video of birds on YouTube and downloaded them. Next, the sounds of knocking at the door, opening the knob, and the wind were recorded. The door itself represents the path in which a person has a decision to either open it or remain it close. As I mentioned earlier, the knocking part is a symbol of opportunities waiting for us to open it. Once we have already decided to turn that knob and pull the door, a new world and experience is just right there. We will soar and fly high like birds even if there are mountains in our journey. Remember to also take it one step at a time to savor every moment of the path you have taken. With this art, I become relieved knowing that there are numerous opportunities behind my door and it only takes one choice for a change to happen. It may be scary to take that risk in the beginning, yet it will be worth the try for sure. Thus, I hope that each and everyone of us has their own door where they can be proud of in opening it; if not, I still believe that there are infinite doors built for you in this lifetime.

🕊 Not Alone

The last artwork is all about the importance of having people we can rely on always in all ways. In Not Alone, the title itself depicts that hoping comes not just with ourselves but also being with our safe space. By simply sending a short message such as “Musta?” can mean so much hope to a person. To make this possible, I gathered screenshots of my friends’ messages where they are checking on me. I put a hand-drawn heart on their faces for privacy and as another way to express my love for them. Though we are apart from each other, it is evident that the friendship is still there. We are lucky enough to have the internet and gadgets such as laptops in which we can communicate with each other regularly. One of the most special highlights of this art is the line from the song I composed amid the pandemic. It flashbacked how I felt alone at that time, not noticing that I have been surrounded by good people. With that, I feel loved and appreciated in the process of doing this piece. As the famous quote says "No man is an island," same goes for each one of us - let us keep ourselves surrounded by people who are best for our well-being and will bring out the best in us.

In this art exhibition “Wide Open,” to hope means: (1) widely opening our eyes to grab a new chance in this life, (2) widely opening the doors of opportunities for a change, and (3) being able to widely open up about ourselves to the people who deserve it. Having these in our thoughts will surely lead to a life full of hope and no one could ever take it away from us.

Link to the Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TpS4yTplIHKztAev1yKlrjQPH6ESHQUO?usp=sharing
