Belief in Qada’ and Qadar (Pre-Destination of Good and Evil)

Belief in Qada’ and Qadar is one of the six pillars of faith in Islam. A Muslim’s faith is not complete without believing that everything happens by Allah’s plan — both good and bad.

This belief helps Muslims feel content, patient, and peaceful, even during hardships, because they know everything happens by Allah’s will.

Qur’anic Proof

Allah says in Surah Al-Qamar (54:49):

“Indeed, We have created all things according to a decree.”

Meaning

• Al-Qadar – From qadara, meaning planned, measured, or decided perfectly. It refers to what Allah has planned before things happen.

• Al-Qada’ – From qada, meaning executed or carried out. It refers to when Allah’s plan actually happens.
  So, Al-Qadar is before Al-Qada’.

Four Components of Qada’ and Qadar

1. Knowledge (ʿIlm)
   Allah knows everything — past, present, future, and even what could have happened.
   “Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things.” (Al-Anfal 8:75)

2. Writing (Kitabah)
   Everything is written in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).
   “All things are in a clear record.” (Al-Hajj 22:70)

3. Will (Mashī’ah)
   Nothing happens unless Allah wills it.
   “You cannot will unless Allah wills.” (Al-Takwir 81:29)

4. Creation (Khalq)
   Allah is the Creator of everything — life, death, and all that exists.
   “He who created death and life to test you.” (Al-Mulk 67:2)

Benefits of Believing in Qada’ and Qadar

1. Gives peace of mind and removes worry.

2. Focuses you on present actions, not the past or future.

3. Builds strength and determination to follow Allah’s path.

4. Teaches humility, patience, and gratitude.

5. Encourages trust in Allah (tawakkul) after doing your best.

6. Helps remove jealousy and envy.

7. Develops good manners and character.

Hadith Jibril

One day, a man with white clothes and black hair came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while he was with his companions.

He sat close to the Prophet and asked him questions about Islam, Iman, and Ihsan.

After the man left, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“That was Angel Jibril (Gabriel). He came to teach you your religion.”

(Hadith reported in Sahih Muslim & Sahih Bukhari)

1. What is Islam?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Islam means to:

1. Say there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger,

2. Perform the five daily prayers,

3. Give zakat (charity),

4. Fast in Ramadan,

5. Perform Hajj (pilgrimage) if able.”

These are the Five Pillars of Islam.

2. What is Iman (Faith)?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“It means to believe in:

1. Allah,

2. His angels,

3. His books,

4. His messengers,

5. The Last Day,

6. Qada’ and Qadar (pre-destination of good and bad).”

These are the Six Pillars of Faith.

3. What is Ihsan (Excellence)?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“It means to worship Allah as if you see Him,

and if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you.”

Ihsan means doing your best sincerely for Allah.

4. When is the Day of Judgment?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The one being asked knows no more than the one asking.”

Then he mentioned some signs, like:

• Poor people competing to build tall buildings,

• A slave giving birth to her master.

Main Lessons

• Islam, Iman, and Ihsan are the three main parts of our religion.

• Jibril taught by asking questions so people could learn.

• We must believe, worship, and do good sincerely for Allah.

• Always remember Allah is watching us.
