What is the current reality in local communities? What are the needs? What additional ideas are there for how the Communities of Practice could support educators?

Since our convening in Dec I have not heard a single thing from neither the county office nor CSSESA regarding how my region will move forward with this. What should we be doing right now to prepare for the upcoming convening in March?

How will county offices reach out directly to teachers to support training in CAASPP administration and instructional pedagogy needed to support teachers. Can ILC teachers help provide the training and professional development needed to support this?

How will CCSSEA contact the individual districts to identify the local teachers in the Math Community of practice and emphasize to district administrators the value of work the Math community of Practice is doing and how it can assist teachers in their districts.

I have never heard of the COP for Math until today. How are people invited to the COP? How do you join? And where should this work be showing up in my district?---Precious James

A1: There is a gap between what teachers understand about the CCSS and how they are supposed to implement those standards in their classrooms. Teachers understand that the standards promote higher level thinking but they are not sure with how to implement the skills in their teaching.

A2: There is a need for CCSS training for teachers that focuses on the content of the standards but also on high impact strategies that work best for implementation. Teachers are struggling with understanding the content of the standards and that is blocking them from effectively implementing the standards.

A3: First, we need to know who are on the COP in Alameda County. It would be great to make connections with those people.
Second, Grade Level Content Courses and Bootcamps, led by teachers of the COP would be really great.

Our ILC team is an accomplished and experienced Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) PD Team. We've been providing CGI PD for years prior to joining ILC. We have received tons of feedback from districts all around us in agreement with our take on math instruction and how it dovetails perfectly with the new California standards. Our training is in great demand around us but is not well supported in Central Unified. Teachers in our own schools want and need CGI support to improve their math pedagogy, but the district will only support our efforts at the surface level.

If the Communities of Practice would recognize and promote the strengths of CGI and how it supports the successful implementation of the CCSS, this would open more doors for the ILC by giving us credibility and putting pressure on those who are stuck in old ways of thinking about mathematical instruction.
