“You feel ashamed, self-conscious, and anxious about your body and you often feel uncomfortable and awkward in your body” (Excerpt From: Hilliard City Schools. “Unit 7: Growth and Development.” v1.0. iBooks.). Having a negative body image makes you think everything negative about your body and think everyone else is attractive and has a better body shape and size than you. Having a negative body image can happen to anyone it's when people spend to much time comparing themselves to others and start to feel bad about the way they look. In today's society many people compare themselves to the people in magazines or online and expect unrealistic body images and if they don't look like them then they feel bad in their own skin.

“With a positive body image, you celebrate and appreciate your natural body shape and you understand that a person’s physical appearance says very little about their character and value as a person” (Excerpt From: Hilliard City Schools. “Unit 7: Growth and Development.” v1.0. iBooks.). Having a positive body image is a great thing. If you feel comfortable in your body then you feel happier and be able to do more things since you aren't trying to cover your body, you feel free and aren't ashamed to wear what you want.

“People with negative body images have a greater likelihood of developing an eating disorder and are more likely to suffer from feelings of depression, isolation, low self-esteem, and obsessions with weight loss” (Excerpt From: Hilliard City Schools. “Unit 7: Growth and Development.” v1.0. iBooks.). They feel so bad about their body that they want to change it so bad that it can become dangerous. People also aim for unrealistic body expectations and will do crazy things to try to achieve that body shape or size and can cause damage mentally and physically.

“We all may have our days when we feel awkward or uncomfortable in our bodies, but the key to developing positive body image is to recognize and respect our natural shape and learn to overpower those negative thoughts and feelings with positive, affirming, and accepting ones” (Excerpt From: Hilliard City Schools. “Unit 7: Growth and Development.” v1.0. iBooks.). Learning that everyone is different and that's okay is something everyone needs to recognize it will help everyone feel better about themselves.

A friend of mine used to have a very bad self image. She would always be looking at girls in magazines, movie or online. She started to try all kinds of weight Lois programs and was only eating things like lettuce and celery, with water to drink. She was becoming very unhealthy from not enough nutrients and overworking her body. She got help to start eating more and to stop overworking her body. With the help she was able to feel great in her own body and not feel ashamed. She quite looking in the mirror so much and stopped comparing herself to others. She learned that just like her personality her body is going to be different and nobody is the same and she was able to feel comfortable in whatever she wore.
