Born: April 23rd, 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire

 Married to Ann Hathaway when she was 26 and he was 18 (bottom)

Children: Susanna, Hamnet and Judith (middle)

He was a member of a traveling company of actors, then in 1592 settled in London earning the reputation as an actor and playwright.

In 1594, The Lord Chamberlain's Men, a new company of actors, formed and Shakespeare was one of the shareholders.

For the rest of his life he stayed a member of The Lord Chamberlain's. 

As Shakespeare was prospering with his fellow actors, they built their own theaters and soon enough lots more theaters were built

After years of writing plays, Shakespeare retired to Stratford and by 1616 Shakespeare died on his birthday.

Shakespeare's plays were mostly written in blank verse, unrhymed lines consisting of ten syllables alternately stressed and unstressed. 

During the time Shakespeare began to write, it was in trend to maintain a regular beat from the beginning to the end.

While Shakespeare wrote, he wrote complying to the current standards then experimented, however as he grew older he found a greater sense of expression.

By being able to stretch his imagination, portray complex thoughts, and present many ideas in a condensed and economical way, William Shakespeare was able to set a new poetic image.

Shakespeare also wrote in prose, ordinary form, for servants, commoners,  etc.

The first of these theaters was The Theatre, which became a financial success.  

However, after many years of performing there, there was a dispute leading to the take down of the building. The Theatre was then recreated as The Globe.

The Tiring House: Where all the actors got dressed. (They performed in modern dress)

Behind the main stage included a curtained area and a smaller inner stage. Above all of this was a balcony.

There are no front curtains on the stage therefore every entrance had its corresponding exit.

Performances took place during the daylight and when there was sufficient weather since there was no ceiling. During performances, a flag flew to tell playgoers to stop by.

Seating: One penny= standing in the pit (groundlings) 

Seating: Those who had more money could pay more for seats under the cover. Therefore the more money the better the seat.

Plays ran between 6-16 performances with no breaks between scenes and no intervals

At the time there were no actresses, so all female parts were played by males. 

There was no scenery on stage so the audience would listen to words and imagine.

Unlike the groundlings, the actors had a canopy to protect them.

The crowd so close helped to make the intimacy possible. 

Playwrights wrote parts to suit the actors that were available.

Although women were not allowed to perform, Shakespeare had courageous women perform.
