Although he didn't have a scientific degree, growing up in this park gave him a vast knowledge of animals in Australia. The first episode of Irwin's famous nature-oriented show The Crocodile Hunter debuted in 1996 on Australian TV. In 1997, the show hit North America and ended up being showed in a grand total of 130 countries, with millions of viewers from around the world. He was an expert at showing the natural world and its environment as well as educating his audience on a multitude of animals. He was a vigorous environmentalist, supporting a plethora of organizations including the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide and the International Crocodile Rescue.
He was also featured in a couple of documentaries which include Croc Files and The Crocodile Hunter Diaries. One time, while on a trip on the coast of Queensland, he discovered 2 new species of animals: the Irwin's Turtle and the snail Crikey steveirwini.

On September 4, 2006,  Steve was creating footage at Batt Reef for a documentary called Ocean's Deadliest. He went snorkeling in an effort to find a stingray, which, unfortunately, took his life. The stingray stabbed him multiple times in the heart which caused massive blood loss and death.
