At the time of this period, Pangaea was being broken up into smaller continents and oceans started to form to fill the gap in between the newly formed continents. The shifting of continents, expanding of coasts, and widening of oceans had made the climate cooler and more moist. The atmosphere at this time had high atmospheric oxygen levels. The change in climate also set into motion extreme changes to the native plant and animal life. At the beginning of the period, dinosaurs were still abundant, however by the end of the period dinosaurs became extinct. In their place formed many mammals and flowering plants that spread across the landscape.

The climate was warmer than it is now, and temperatures were up to 35 degrees Celsius in the oceans. During this period, it was so hot that the poles were completely free of ice. The atmosphere was much more rich in oxygen during this period than it is in present day. As for the geographic conditions, Pangaea was starting to break up and modern day continents started to form as well as modern day oceans.
