The Civil War was a result of conflict over slavery and westward expansion. Abolitionists opposed the idea of letting slavery spread into the new states. However, representatives form the South thought otherwise, they wanted slavery to spread into the new states. Adding on, shortly after Abraham Lincoln was elected president and vowed to stop slavery from spreading into the new states. This angered the Southerners who supported slavery, so 7 states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate. Yet Lincoln did not see their nation as a real nation and on April 12, 1861 the Confederate launched a attack on the Union, marking the start of the Civil War.

After the battle at Fort Sumter 4 Southern states, including, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia joined the Confederacy. Lincoln had no worries even with these new recruits, he thought that the War was going to be a breeze. The first battle of the Civil war didn't go as planned for Lincoln, the Confederacy ended up defeating the Union. After that battle, General E. Lee took charge of leading the Confederacy, and ended up winning three battles. He ended up using this power by invading the Union, but didn't succeed when forced Lee to leave. In the end, McClellan was removed by Lincoln.

During the Civil War the Confederacy managed to have a strong advantage over Union forces despite the one victory the Union had. As time went on though, the advantage started to shift into the favor of the Union due to the Emancipation Proclamation that President Lincoln passed. However after the Proclamation was passed, the Confederacy still managed to win battle after battle until the fated Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was where the Confederacy had lost over 1/3 of their soldiers. This battle decided the turn of the war in the Union's favor.

Eventually by April of 1865 the cities of Petersburg and Richmond nearly collapsed due to General Grant's destructive battles in an effort to capture those two cities. General Robert E. Lee knowing that he was going to lose tried to retreat back to the South only to be stopped at Appomattox Courthouse several days later. In the end, General Lee and Confederate forces surrendered to General Grant and thus ending the Civil War. After that, the Confederacy was united once again with the United States and the 13th amendment was passed to end slavery and bring peace. Unfortunately, Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer and did not live to see the end of slavery.

In March of 1864 Lincoln assigned Ulysses S. Grant to be Supreme Commander of all Union armies. Grant had proven himself worthy of his position multiple time, for instance leading the attack of Vicksburg. Thus, Lincoln believed that he had appointed the right person to the position to defeat the Confederate and their commander Lee. Soon enough a series of battle broke out in mid-1864 the battle of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. Although these two battles did not necessarily prove the Union victorious, the battle of Richmond and Petersburg were. The two cities were important supply centers for the Confederate. Lastly, Sherman's successful March to the Sea also secured the Union's victory. Sherman was able to successfully capture Savannah, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
