Life expectancy grows every year, while the birth rate decreases, so that the country has an increasingly aging population. To this is added that, according to figures from the Ministry of Health, Chileans have reduced their water intake and increased their consumption of sugary drinks. Likewise, the intake of ultra-processed foods has grown and, on the contrary, it has fallen in the case of fruits, legumes and vegetables.
All this - added to increasingly common risk factors, such as obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption - has led to an increase in the appearance of chronic diseases more prematurely in the population.
To measure the impact, the number of people suffering from different chronic diseases and who maintain behavioral habits that can enhance the appearance of this type of pathologies was estimated, based on the 2016-2017 National Health Survey.
In this way, according to figures presented by the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, it was calculated that more than half of Chileans live with two or more chronic diseases, that is, more than 9.7 million people. Chronic diseases such as those shown in the graph:

Can these problems be reflected in other countries?

More than 2 billion adults in the world are overweight or obese. It is not just any figure: it is more than a quarter of the world's population. This is a health problem that leads to the death of 4 million people every year because it triggers multiple diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancers, depression, disabilities, among other complications.
Obesity is turning into a time bomb: since 1975, the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity have tripled and now more than 2 billion people. The increase has been dramatic in all regions of the world and in people of all ages and if urgent measures are not taken, the trend is likely to increase, according to the most recent report published by the World Bank.
Therefore, according to what has been said above, we can say that obesity and the diseases caused by it are present throughout the world, whether in the poorest countries or even in the richest, economically speaking; and it is something that must be resolved at a general level, in order to keep the population of the entire world healthier and in good condition.

Are there effective health programs in other countries that can be replicated in your country?

Yes, there are many effective health programs in other countries, but they cannot be replicated in our country due to the policy that governs us.
For example: There are already some countries in the region that are taking action. In Mexico, where obesity derived diseases are the main cause of death, a 10% tax has been implemented on sugar-sweetened beverages, which is expected to reduce the obesity rate by 2.5% by 2024 and prevent 86,000 to 134,000 new cases of diabetes by 2030.
Another example but in europe: this are the 5 priority areas in the proyect:
•Create healthy food and beverage environments.
• Promote the benefits of a healthy diet throughout
life, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
• Strengthen health systems to promote
healthy food.
• Support surveillance, monitoring, evaluation and
Investigation.
• Strengthen governance, alliances and networks to
ensure a health in all policies approach.
