A pistol shrimp is easily recognizable for its noticeable snapping claw which is larger than half of its body. It also has one normal claw. The snapping claw consists of two parts – the hammer part, which moves backwards into a right angled position and snaps into the fixed part. Hence the name snapping shrimp.

The behavioural adaptation of the pistol shrimp is how it snaps it's claw shut to fire a bubble and stuns it's prey. Another behavioural adaptation is it's relationship with the Goby fish. The Goby fish helps the pistol shrimp by warning it when predators are near. Its bullets are about 4,400 degrees Celsius!
