A common challenge for children is being able to understand and develop their identity. Melina Marchetta has shown this in the novel Looking for Alibrandi through the character of Josie. Throughout the book Josie struggles with what her identity is, not really sure where or how she fits in. This discovering of identity which Melina has used as a common theme throughout the novel shows us how Josie changes due to the journey of finding herself. Josie becomes more settled and accepting of her heritage. But this also shows how worrying about what other people think can hinder the discovery of your identity.

"I’ve suffered in my life, you know", Josie Alibrandi faced many challenges throughout the novel Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta. One of these challenges was accepting her identity as an Italian Australian instead of fighting it. Josie struggles to find herself as a young woman as people around her seem to undermine the confidence she has in herself. We see this throughut the novel as Josie is treated unfairly by some of the people at her school. She is also held to impossible standards by her Italian Nonna who is critical of Josie as she doesn't believe she behaves the way a young Italian woman should. However, as the novel progresses we soon see a change happening in Josie as she begins to listen to the suffering her Nonna had to go through when she left Italy. She realises that her Nonna experienced much more hardship and faced more challenges than Josie has. This leads Josie to respect her Nonna much more as she understands why she is so fond of her Italian culture. This helps Josie to be confident in herself and not worry about what others think about her culture and heritage. We see Josie change from being someone who denied their identity and did not want to embrace their culture to someone who's culture influences their identity which helps Josie to become a person she is proud to be.

Josie changes from being someone who is not willing to accept her culture and identity to someone who embraces it. This change helps others to realise that you can't change the opinions other people have about you but you can change the way those opinions make you feel. Josie wanted to change who she was when she was at school as she knew people thought she didn't fit in however as she changed she realised that other people's opinions about you shouldn't matter and other people shouldn't make you want to change yourself. Only you can change yourself. This is what Josie Alibrandi showed us as she embraced her culture and heritage instead of ignoring it.

Some people find it hard to fit in, but is it really easy for them to fit in when there are people who are judge them for who they are, and where they come from. We live in a society where people aren't ok with different religions in their country. Some countries way in dealing with it is to block them out, ignore them, try and change them. Don't we want to invite different culture into our world, or do we want to be a boring old forgotten place.

Josie's change teaches the reader that you shouldn't be worried about what people think of you, because they most likely do not care as much as you think.

This relationship taught me how important communication is, especially when you're both going though a rough time. Also how important a father/daughter relationship is. Melina Marchetta's purpose of this relationship was to teach the reader these lessons, and to show that anyone can form a great connection with anyone. Many young people, often rely on their parents to do almost everything for them, but it is very hard when you only have one parent.

Maybe one of the most fundamental parts of solving conflict is having the ability dismantle a problem and view it in a more objective light. Taking things personally is something our protagonist, Josie, almost can do in a heartbeat. In Melina Marchetta's 'Coming of age' novel, "Looking for Alibrandi" Josie must learn to accept Michael Andretti into her life. She learns that her emotions and pride is keeping her from what she's always ached for the most. A father.

Josephine is a stubborn, closed off character who faces the challenge of letting a father back into her life. Her character changes due to this challenge as she learns to accept her father and break down her walls. Throughout the novel Looking for Alibrandi by Melissa Marchetta. She is shown to be afraid of letting people close because she is fearful that her father's past decision will occur again. This time she doesn't want to be the one hurting, therefore she doesn't attach herself to anything/anyone that may leave. People often portray a tough exterior even though behind the hard walls they are slowly breaking on the inside. Josie shows that nothing gets to her through her tough personality whereas on the inside is a little girl afraid of being hurt. Melissa shows this message throughout the novel and Josie is changing due to her fear of being hurt. This challenge proves to bring out Josie's true feelings giving you the ability to see the changes she overcomes through the novel

Their relationship taught me how it's easy to forgive a distant father by one little act of kindness. Another thing I learnt from their relationship was how close you can still be with your long lost father even though he came in a few years to late.

Marchetta has successfully convinced us that Josie has developed as a person throughout the course of the text and has learnt to love and accept her culture and herself. By Marchetta showing this change in Josie she is implying that most people will take time to develop and become comfortable as their own person. As many people can face negativity surrounding their culture and heritage it can force them to not accept themselves as they are. Everybody is different and it will take different amounts of time for people to be happy in their own skin.
