We see this throughut the novel as Josie is treated unfairly by some of the people at her school. She is also held to impossible standards by her Italian Nonna who is critical of Josie as she doesn't believe she behaves the way a young Italian woman should. However, as the novel progresses we soon see a change happening in Josie as she begins to listen to the suffering her Nonna had to go through when she left Italy. She realises that her Nonna experienced much more hardship and faced more challenges than Josie has. This leads Josie to respect her Nonna much more as she understands why she is so fond of her Italian culture. This helps Josie to be confident in herself and not worry about what others think about her culture and heritage.
