Codeine acts in the central nervous system (CNS). Opioids attach to specific opioid receptors (found in the brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract) and when this happens, opioids can effectively change the way a person experiences pain. Codeine can affect regions of the brain that influence how we perceive pleasure, which could result in an initial feeling of euphoria after taking the medication.

5. What are Short Term and Long Term Effects of your drug? Can the use of the drug be fatal?

Common short term effects other than pain relief include euphoria, itching, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis (enlargement of pupils), urinary retention, depression, constipation, lack of sexual drive, increased complications in erectile dysfunction, swelling skin and rashes, respiratory depression. Breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure start to slow down to dangerous levels. Long term effects of codeine can result in tolerance, which means that some people will increase the dosage to attempt to achieve the same results. This can lead to abuse and dependency. With chronic codeine use, the brain slows or even stops endorphin production, resulting in acute pain without codeine use. Itching, nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, constipation, liver damage and stomach ulcers may also occur. Chronic use of codeine can cause physical dependence, so withdrawal symptoms may occur if a person suddenly stops taking it. These adverse symptoms include drug craving, runny nose, yawning, sweating, insomnia, weakness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle spasms, chills, irritability, and pain. Codeine can be fatal when misused or becoming dependent on it. Misuse can lead to faints or even death, withdrawals can be worse than Heroine.
