The Soviets did not participate but in the United States there were several organizations advocating the boycott. General Charles Sherrill advocated to have Jewish athletes participate on the German team. They allowed a few athletes to participate, a notable female competitor include Helene Mayer. The regime exploited the games to impress foreign spectators and journalists. They tried to persuade the public with an image of a peaceful Germany. Because of this, they were systematically excluded from German sports associations, public pools, gymnastics and sports facilities. Once the games began, many athlete's careers were interrupted. For example, Daniel Preen was one of Germany's top ranked tennis players but because of his Jewish heritage he was persecuted from Germany's Davis Cup. Germany asked all countries to not bring Jewish athletes into the game. During the games, sprinters Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller were benched for their relays and replaced by Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe. The coach claimed they switched them because they needed their faster sprinters. Gretel Bergmann qualified for the Women's high jump event. However, German officials informed this Jewish athlete she was denied a place. The Germans only used 2 out of 3 of their qualifying spots.

German authorities allowed fencer Helen Mayer, who was half Jewish to represent Germany. No other athlete of Jewish ancestry competed for Germany. Many laws were put in place to prevent athletes to be persecuted for being a certain race, gender, or religion. The aftermath of the games influenced how athletes are viewed in today’s society. There is no tolerance for religious prosecution from now on till future games.
