Student crew will be split into two watches and paired with professional crew and will take turns running the ship. This includes, steering the ship, standing look out, setting and trimming sails, navigation, and hourly boat checks. The “off-watch” group will be learning about whales and estuary systems with some of the professional crew.

Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest maritime museum in the United States. It boasts a collection of ships and boats and a re-creation of a 19th-century seaport village consisting of more than 60 historic buildings, including many rare commercial structures that were moved to the site and meticulously restored.

Today is the perfect day with clear weather, light winds, and a happy crew.

BRILLANT is an offshore classroom for the Mystic Seaport Museum. Their sailing program offers people of all ages the opportunity to learn about sailing on one of the finest wooden schooners ever built.

And BRILLIANT is captained by the illustrious Sarah Armour who long ago used to be the Educational Coordinator on the LADY MARYLAND when LP was the mate (in 2016).

Cuttyhunk Island is the outermost of the Elizebeth Island in Massachusetts.

The island is located between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound and is near Penikese and Nashawena Island.

The island has an estimated population of 10 residents, swelling to around 400 in the summer months. It is the fourth largest of the Elizabeth Islands and home to the village of Cuttyhunk. 

Historically, whaling was an essential economic driver for East coast port communities like New Bedford and Nantucket.

The New Bedford Whaling museum has some of the best collections of whale bone artifacts, scrimshaw, whale skeletons, and traditional whaling artifacts anywhere in the United States.

The Museum plays a critical role as a champion for whale preservation and as guardians for our heritage and culture.

"We are underway and outbound New Bedford, MA. Winds are WNW at 11-14 knots becoming WSW 5-10 as we turn up into Narragansett Bay, RI. We are headed towards Prudence Island which is a small island in the northwestern part of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. We will anchor for the night and tomorrow is the final day of the trip!"

"LADY MARYLAND anchored last night on the northeast side of Prudence Island. The trip to the dock in Providence today is only about 10 miles. Last night the student crew all presented their final projects and today we'll do a final deckwash, clean bunks, pack-up, and meet Allie Kryjak who will take everyone to Providence to board the train to head home."
