After the landmark Supreme Court case Roe V. Wade legalized first-term abortion, the longstanding debate between pro-choice and pro-life believers began and was officially brought into the political world. This is significant to culture of the 80's because in a time of rising conservative values, many disliked the pro-choice mindset and abortion was one of many topics that split groups and sparked debate.

HIV/AIDS originated in the 1980's, first among gay men, but soon spread to large portions of the homosexual population. AIDS is representative of the 80's because it reflects the hard times of the decade; AIDS proved to be one of the most concerning, life-threatening diseases known to the world, and many didn't know how to handle the outbreak. As a result, it became a topic involved in the political realm as well as pop culture with many protests, and is still around today.

Rap was born in the 80's and began becoming increasingly popular with teens. It started in New York but eventually spread to teens around the country. Many parents hated the new rebellious sound and wanted to revert to the old traditional values. This lead to parental revolts against the new era and a deeper want for a return to traditional values. This safe tradition was found in the conservative Reagan.
