Jim Beckwourth and Jedadiah Smith were famous rugged loners, they were connected economically to the businessmen they sold their fur to. William Henry Ashley, one of the businessmen, creating a trading arrangement, the Rendezvous System. People go to a designated spot for the rendezvous and traded. This took place every summer from 1825 to 1840. Some mountain men worked streams so heavily it killed off the animals, forcing trappers to move elsewhere. Trappers moved far west and it helped with the first knowledge of the west. This knowledge, and the mountains the men destroyed made it possible for pioneers to move west. One trail was the South Pass, a wide valley through the Rockies.  Located in presented day Wyoming. There was so much land, people called land speculators bought huge areas of land. To speculate means to buy something hoping that it would increase in value. William Becknell opened the Santa Fe Trail which led from Missouri to Santa Fe. Another trail was the Oregon Trail, which started at Independence, Missouri to the Oregon Territory. Britain and America were fighting for Oregon because of the amazing resources, tall wheat, sun rays, and pigs. People would walk the 200 miles just for Oregon this was the Oregon Fever. The Sager family tries to go to Oregon through the Oregon Trail but it was very difficult said them. One daughter got crushed in her leg by the train, later "camp fever" killed both of the parents. Mormons moved west for religious purposes. One mormon, Joseph Smith, founded a mormon church in New York. But many people were upset with this religion. In 1844, anti-Mormon mob in Illinois killed Smith. But instead, some Americans hated us and our religion, they thought our practice of polygamy was immoral. But it doesn't matter because that's what we believe in.
